575sci Rebuilds finally complete... Details inside
Well, after my port motor wiped a cam lobe in august, we pulled both motors out and stripped them down to bare blocks. During the teardown process, I sent a oil sample out to see what my zinc numbers were for both motors. The numbers came back surprising low. 617 was the number for the port number and it was supposed to be just over twice that per Valvoline. I used to run the VR-1 20w50. Anyway, is it possible that the low zinc caused my failure, sure... but did it... I dunno. Anyway, with the rebuilds, I ended up doing the following:
New main bearings - Clevite 77 H series New rod bearings - Clevite 77 H series New cam bearings - Clevite 77 New Hyd. Roller Cam - Marine Kenetics (Bob Madara) New GM Single Roller Timing Chain/Gear set New Morell Roller Lifters New Manton pushrods (New Lengths required) Full head rebuilds by Jim Valako w/ porting ECM Remapping by Precision Marine Felpro Hi-Perf Gaskets Breaking in with Joe Gibbs Racing Oil 20w50 No need to re-ring.. leak down was 8% on port, 10% on STBD so I left them Still loading pics but here is a link from Fridays shake down run from my Go Pro HD... first time using it. Took the video in 1080p. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZFYTmX3UpM I will follow up with an album location to show multiple pics of the rebuild process... BTW, lake had large rollers on it Friday and we were taking ti easy... saw 4k rpm mostly but engines felt pretty strong. GREAT oil pressure... 60 psi across the board, temps were good, and no leaks. Motors have approx. 1 hour of run time on them since rebuild with ZERO problems. So far so good but we'll have to wait till spring to find out what she'll do on the high end mark. I think we'll be hitting the 100 mark but time will tell. May be looking for a set of great shape BRAVO34's and selling an extra set of my BRAVO 32's.... if anyone has any or is looking... Well, thats it for now... :drink: |
NICE!!!! Good job on the timely rebuild......nice to put her to rest knowing they are running well.........
|
They sound great...Keep them happy with Kendall 20w50.
|
Looking good Todd!

Thanks guys. I thought the anxiety would pass once I got it back on the water with no issues now its building again to see what she'll do.... oh the pressure....lol
|
As for oil, i have been using mobil one v twin, but I just got an analysis form a local amsoil rep and their V twin Oil is higher, they did a test across the board and the only one to come in better than mobil one was the amsoil. oh and it is less expensive than the Mobil one. :)

Looking good.

I was planning on going with the Brad Penn for sure... even though I am running a roller cam now and don't necessarly need to run the high zinc but figured it couldnt hurt.
The 100mph run is very doable I think... just need to get another set of props. Running bravo 32's merc lab finish, but hitting 5500 rpm at 94mph. Thinking of trying another set of 34's and sending those out for labbing. Tried a stock set over the summer but couldn't plane out. Needed more cupping. |

good luck & see ya on the Lake Todd:drink::drink::drink: Also, just food for thought, our 8.1 GMC lost 10lbs oil pressure when we switched to Brad Penn from Mobil 1 silver cap. After 1k miles, we put silver cap back in, and the oil pressure is back to where it was before the brad penn. I know alot of circle track and drag race people run Brad Penn, but the lower oil pressure deal in our truck kinda scared us. |
So you added a hyd roller cam, lifters, stock heads setup by Jim Valako and a little bit of his magic. NICE!!

I'm with ya. The oil that Kendall was "famous" for is now Brad Penn. The Kendall name was bought and now a lower grade oil is produced under that name..... the newer Kendall hasn't been very popular to say the least. I think this happened in the late 90's or so.

Todd just curious why did'nt you guys put a new set of rings in while you had her all apart ??? just thinkin cheap insurance .. good luck BIG Daddy |
I thought about it but when we did the leak down tests, the percentages were very low so I let it go. I ask myself the same question but the overall goal was to hit key west this february and I knew I would not have enough time to break in the motors prior to then if I put new rings in. We are hoping to get a trip in to the Bahamas from the Keys if all goes well....
