No. I think that he forgot to factor in the price of the gears and propshafts.

You would be better of financially to buy some used ones and have them gone through. ;):)

I send my #6's to Craig Colabella of Colabella Performance in St Cloud, FL. Craig used to work for Lake X and his job was to work on the #6 drives among other things. Matt at TNT in Miami is also a top notch drive man. Craig charges $1,000 to tear down and rebuild a #6. Prop shafts are about $1,800 each. Lower gear sets are close to that as well. If you need upper gears add another 2 grand per drive. All seals, propshaft bearings, split line o-rings, drive oil, etc run about $350 per drive. Assuming you have a twin engine application and you are refreshing both drives, you can often swap the lower gears from one drive to the other as they only wear on one side. That saves about $1,800 a drive. If you need to overhaul the whole drive of all parts, figure $7,000+ per drive. If you need just seals, etc (no gears or propshafts) figure $1,350 per drive.

If you need to replace most of the gears, bearings, seals, prop shafts, and possibly the u-joints and labor....it will be closer to 15k to do both drives...
at least that's what it cost me in '07...

plumbers crack 12-04-2010 02:54 PM

I had a pair tprn down inspected and rebuilt without prop shafts and gears and that cost me 17k ! My cases and gears were good.I hears shafts alone are $3,800.00 a piece.

I'm guessing you had the drives rebuilt by someone who bought the parts from someone who bought the parts from a dealer. Probably 2 mark ups on the parts before you were charged another mark up. I have been charged $1,800 and some change for propshafts when my drives have been rebuilt.

Shallow Minded 12-04-2010 06:21 PM

How often should a guy plan on doing a "refresh" to #6's?

I got over 330 hours on my drives so they really don't owe me nothing.... They were on a 36 Nortech Cat with Merc 850'S.... I have been told that if they were on a V bottom they would not have lasted as long....

weldcrane 12-04-2010 07:32 PM

Nopper Marine in Fairhaven Mass he is the tranny and drive guy ask for Peter he's the owner

Go to TNT. Matts the best! Never lost a drive and he takes care of mine. It will cost some cash but it will be a fair deal.

frankenstein 12-05-2010 01:56 AM

I remember when the #6's came out, they were advertised as "Bullet Proof", so what happened ? Was it a armored piercing bullet that got you ? Just kidding obviously, good luck

wgg 12-05-2010 09:00 AM

Agreed about TNT Matt will give you an exact estimate on cost and time and live with it Prices are fair but at least you get what you pay for not always the case anymore

notda1 12-05-2010 09:26 AM

I have delt with Skip at MRD for years on my speedmaster drives . He's out in Long Island NY , always had good luck with the repairs and prices seemed reasonable . Made it a lot easier for me I could just drive them over to him .

SFOcean 12-06-2010 10:40 PM

"Ocean, Thanks for the reply but do you really think I can get them rebuilt for 5k Each???? My Bravos cost almost that much..."

Vern just got done with my wet sump, replaced gears and propshaft with extremely low hour (look new, no wear on shaft at all) parts, all new bearings and seals. Bill was 4K.
Vern does all of Teague's stuff too.
I might be lucky, but I just bought a new set of 1.6 gears for $180, yep, you read right. (from Tres Martin)

tommymonza 12-06-2010 11:06 PM

Wow .330 hours from some 850 s and sixes need full rebuilds ?

I will never understand why more people don' run Arnesons.

I know that not every bottom has the means to carry the bow without the trim but It just blows me away that a 30 thousand dollar drive is only good for so few of hours with that power.

i had heard after they went dry sump the sixes required more frequent rebuild intervals, some as low as fifty to a hundred hours for a freshen up.

I had him go through my wet-sump #6's @ 350 hours. They had 1200+HP in front of them for 325 of those hours. They were fine, but it was good to find that out!!

I have also sent #6's to Craig. I build quite a few Bravos, but not 6's. I am extremely picky about who I send my stuff to and was exceptionally pleased with Craig. He did what he said, when he said and that's all you can ask for.

Wow big diffrence in how many hours you get out of wet sump to dry sump 6's. I don't think the 2-3 mph is worth it.

i sent a pair down to Cobra power before key west and had them rebuilt in a week. great price and service with a one year warranty. They have all parts in stock from shafts ,berings etc. Plus they have great deals on used #6s also with warrantys. Alot has changed in this ecomony,no need to pay top dollar Mercury repair prices anymore. Shop around and make sure you get a warranty. Give Randy or Alex a call.
