Default 1999 42 Fountain Lightning 500EFI Bravo drive height

What is the best setup for this 99 42' lightning with bone stock 500efis and bravos. They have just been freshened up and make about 550hp each. I think the drives are way too deep in the water. Would a 5 blade prop be better? I don't want to cut up the transom so my only option is a shorty lower unit. How many inches increments can I do shortys from stock. Isn't there 1 inch shorter or 2 inch shorter. What does this do? What prop goes with when you do that?
thanks
