Cash Bar 01-09-2011 05:24 PM

Cash Bar= 20+ yrs of bartending history, even during periods of other employment. Haven't been behind a bar in a few years as my Real Estate career blossomed but the name will always stick.

It went on my first performance boat(29 Fountain) since I paid cash and it came from tips.

I think we had a thread like this. I'll try a search. It had a HUGE response.

Gordo 01-09-2011 06:54 PM

There were a few other "Mikes in the offshore racing circles, and a couple of other "Mikes" in the fire department I worked for. At some point I became "Gordo". The name stuck.
To this day, if someone said "Mike" I may not know if you're referring to me or not. But I can be a thousand miles from home, riding on the deck of a raceboat in a parade and hear someone yell Hey Gordo! there's no doubt, somebody knows me. :)

Perlmudder 01-09-2011 09:38 PM

Perlmudder came from about grade 8 when I decided I was going to be a rapper. Seemed like a good career choice. My last name is Perlstein and alot of my friends call me Jperl so I took part of that, and thought about how rappers well, rap, and I came up with mutter. But that didn't sound right so i changed it to mudder. Then whamo! Perlmudder was born. The name sort of went under for a couple years until I told one of my sisters boyfriends about it, and he started calling me it. From then on, it just sort of stuck.

HIGH LIFE, I was rigging my '79 BANANA when a friend showed up with a 6-pack of Miller High Life, liked the style of lettering, and it being two 4 letter words. I enjoy living the "HIGH LIFE" when cruising on the MAGNUM. My name is not Miller, and I don't drink beer, but if you have Absolute vodka, make mine with tonic. "HIGH LIFE"

Shah Mat 01-10-2011 05:10 AM

Back in the 90's I had just bought my first boat, a 19'Checkmate bow rider. A few years later someone sent me an e-mail with a bunch of trivia things in it. Shah Mat was one of them. In 01' I bought my 25 Checkmate then shortly after stumbbled onto this site. Seemed like the name fit. :drink: My name is actually Joe

"Checkmate" in chess is actually "Shah Mat," Persian for "the king is defeated" or the "king is helpless".

Chess is a REALLY OLD GAME. The earliest evidence of chess dates back to the year 600 AD in Persia. "Shah" is the title of the royal Persian monarch, so naturally the King in chess was called the Shah. To win chess, you have to defeat the King, by attacking it and making it unable to move. This is called the "Checkmate" or "Shah Mat", literally, "The King is defeated". Mat is a Persian word for "defeated", "helpless", or "at a loss", all pretty good descriptions for a checkmated king.

Millions of chess enthusiasts wrongly assume that "Checkmate" actually means "The King is dead". Chess made its way from Persia to Europe through Arabia and "mat" is an Arab word for dead, so this is a likely source of the confusion. The King in chess can't be "killed" anyway, so "defeated" makes a lot more sense.

The word for "chess" is still "Schach" in Central Europe with a pronunciation close to "Shah" and the defeated king is "Schach matt". The word "matt" is widely used in Central Europe, many indo-european words are close to persian words.

ElimiNordic 01-10-2011 06:05 AM

BlowerDan

Mine is easy. I own a Eliminator and a Nordic=ElimiNordic. I used to be BlowerDan which is what all my boating buddies called me since I was the one of the first boats on our lake to run a blower in the mid 80's. After using it on the internet, I got all kind of rude offers from guys who like other guys and I had to change it

Knot 4 Me 01-10-2011 09:12 AM

I went to CG register my current boat so I had to come up with a boat name. My wife said to name it "Knot 4 Me" since she knew it was not the boat I wanted but instead it was a boat for her and my son. So I used the same name when I registered for OSO.

Gladhe8er 01-10-2011 09:36 AM

I was an a-hole in my mid 20's when I joined the board.

animalhouse 01-10-2011 09:49 AM

I was the captain of several boats for a friend of mine named animal house. Then we built him the animal house 51 OL.

I was also president of my fraternity in college, so animal house had several meanings.

WOTW2E 01-10-2011 11:03 AM

Good thread.

When I bought my boat things were going really well. I had the money to make the upgrades to the engines but did not want to blow the warranty. So I was Waitin On The Warranty 2 Expire.

Needless to say once the warranty expired, there was no money for upgrades.

LapseofReason 01-10-2011 12:52 PM

When I bought my 42 Sonic in 2000 I wanted to USCG doc. it so you have to name it. My dad was over and I had all the paper work out on the table and he saw I paid I think it was 184k, he looked at me and said boy talk about a Lapse of Reason. It's been the name of the last 2 and until something is more fitting I'll keep using it.

Keytime 01-10-2011 05:46 PM

Keytime is a term from offroad motorcycle enduro racing, to sound as proper as possible. In an enduro, you race against the clock, and the official time for an enduro is keytime.

"Key time is simply the master clock used to set all the other clocks in an enduro. You should set your watch, or whatever timekeeping device you use, to (key time - your minute number)."

I raced for a number of years and steadily moved up the ranks (hitting a plateau a time or two). I have a lot of pride in my offroad racing experience, and I felt the term summed that up really well. Plus, the intensity of racing offroad carries over well to hammering a performance boat, so I liked the fit.

My avatar pic was taken at the Leadbelt National Enduro near Park Hills, MO at a series of rock ledge dropoffs called "the waterfall". Sloppy, nasty, and getting after it, just like running in the rough. :drink:
