Good Used Performance Boat, 20-24 feet

Parameters:

Used

20' - 24'

$30k or less

Performance boat to be used only a few times a year.

My father spends most of the cold months in the Keys, but during the summer months we get bored in Illinois. I am looking for a present for my dad that we can both use together during the summer months on our mid-size inland lake. I like the Fountain 25', the Formula 24' and the Baja 22'. We are both experienced boaters, I used to run my dad's 53' Viking. However, I have no experience with small performance boats. I know a few companies who make quality boats (Fountain, Baja, etc.) but spending mega bucks on a boat that is only used a few weekends per year is not my idea of fun.

Donzi Classic 22 or Cig 20??

gare 01-12-2011 07:05 AM

National Marine in Peoria Heights, IL has a 242 Formula for $22,000. I think it is being brokered by National. The owners moved up to a Formula 330SS. I believe the 242 is in excellent condition with no issues. Definetly worth checking out. Their phone number is 309-688-5513 or look at it here; http://www.nationalmarinesales.com/contact.html

Lots of choices in that range do you want an outboard or an i/o do you need cabin space? I allways liked the 25' Checkmate they make a nice boat for the money. Also there are lots of 25' Baja's to choose from you can get a newer boat at a fair price. Alsoa 25' PowerPlay you can never go wrong with a PowerPlay. Check these out as well
21'Sutphen
21' Superboat
22'Activator
22'Progression
23'Kryptonite (I don't think youd be able to find one)
24'Skater
24'Pantera (Awesome boat)
24'Superboat
24'Sunsation (best customer service in the business)
24'Progression
25'Active Thunder
25'PowerPlay
25'Checkmate
25'Baja

Performance Boat

Might be hard to find a a great used boat in that price range if your looking for a newer/custom look and ride... However an Eliminator 25/26 Eagle is a great V-bottom which comes in a closed/cuddy/or walk-thru open bow versions and is a single engine/turn key family boat .... just an idea... Good Luck!

What about this one: http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi..._id=72671&url=

22' Donzi ZX 1997 asking 15k

Under any other circumstances I would applaud that deep V this Donzi appears to have. However I am afraid to go any lower than 2'6" in our shallow chain of lakes.

You know, I love the lines of this boat - just like I love large SF boats without bow rails. But the practicality thing comes into play here, I wish there was a pad somewhere for women to sun tan. I don't know fellas...

Trying to think of which v- bottom performance boat is going to have a draft shorter than 2'6". Probably none. Maybe a jon boat with a 25hp mercury. You can put a big plywood deck up front for the girls to tan on, jk. Seriously the 24 Formula in Peoria Heights is probably not too far to drive. Definately worth a look.

To Back out of the Garage is too far to look at this at 22k

Here is my buddys boat. It is very nice and gets all kind of attention. Give him a call. I know he is motivated to sell.

Don't worry too much about the draft. I been on the Chain for years, never had a problem. You just have to know the lakes and follow some one when you go to Blarneys. (assuming Blarneys is still there :) )

It's a brokered boat and I'm pretty sure the price is very negotiable. I agree though, asking price is a little steep for the year. I was just saying it's relatively close. You might be surprised at what it could be bought for. I have seen it and know how it was cared for. Of course that's not worth much, lol.
I like the lines on that Donzi.

You know what I am talking about when it comes to water depth in the chain...It is a serious issue. Grass Lake has an average depth of 3', so that makes it pretty much off limits, unless there are marked areas suitable for deeper draft boats. The other two lakes have a depth of 10'+. I haven't been out on the chain in years but Blarneys' Island is still there, I went there for a couple drinks last summer.

This is a good thread. What about tweaking that list for a boat that'll have a porti potty for momma, and a small cabin for the kid? Which one will handle rough water the best? What'll handle the most power?

I had a Donzi 22 Classic with 600hp and it was a handful past 75mph. 86 was the best I got on GPS and that round keel was NOT stable. And lack of cabin/porti-potty forced it's sale after I got married.

But I need something I can pull with my 4runner V8 (under 7,300lbs total) counting trailer, gas, beverage coolers, etc. And it'll need to handle the Potomac River, Lake Anna, etc.

Undecided on I/O vs outboard. I love the BBC sound, and have a whipple blower/EFI setup on the shelf in my basement. But, I'm very tempted by the ease of use/maint/winterizing and better MPG of the outboard- plus the increased cockpit space of such a small boat.

Too Stroked 10-16-2011 06:58 PM

If draft is as much of an issue as it appears to be, I'd suggest something with an outboard instead of an I/O. Lighter weight = shallower draft. And it ain't half bad for speed either. I get 76 MPH (GPS) out of my 22' Progression with a mildly modified 200. Finding one in your price range might be problematic though.

DirtyJerz 10-16-2011 08:03 PM

If depth is that big of a deal, how about a jetboat?

LOVE that Tantrum, but that 600SC will be in need of a refresh soon, won't it? I wonder what that would cost if someone had to pay to have it removed, refreshed, and reinstalled by a reputable shop?

The original poster has not been on OSO for 6 months, so I wouldn't worry about trying to help him too much.

Only part I don't have is the port-potti. :drink: Depending on which outboard you go with the BBC can be just as fuel efficient. The 225/250 3.0 liter Merc EFI's are gas hogs. My 550+ Big Block gets over 2 mpg (usually around 2.5) and that's cruising at 45 mph.

For rough water, you won't find a better boat than the Pantera. Total weight is less than 6k, ready to boat ride.

If you are interested in a great boat in that range do not look beyond the banana.... it is the 24 cig. mold built by charlie mccarthy and is a fantastic rough water boat. small enough to go anywhere and big enougn to go anywhere. I have owned two and think they are great.. also I know charlie has a demo for sale. I am sure you could get it at a good price.
