Skater 368/388 difference

Hey guys,,, I know their are alot of you out there that can answer this for me.... I was wondering what the main difference bwtn a Skater 368 and 388 model is? from the naked eye or on the trailer the boats appear identical to me. however when i read up on them.... they talk about a 2ft farring on a 388..... However in some cases i see the same boated advertised as a 368 and 388.... It almost depends on whos selling the boat.... Is their actually a difference between a 368/388 Model??? anyone know the real deal here?? Ive also noticed the back of hulls can have different setups too... if anyone knows why that is?

Two different boats , a 36 with the tunnel widened 8", and a 38 with a wide tunnel . I'm sure there's more , but that's the basic idea.
Both awesome boats.
Any extention off the transom is not included in the overall length.

SS930 01-12-2011 07:22 AM

I've never really looked into it, but I always thought the difference was the 388 had a bussle, hence the extra 2'.

blume 01-12-2011 08:04 AM

368/388

The 388 is two and a half foot longer than the 368, the 388 sponson is one and a half inch wider, the 388 has a little deeper tunnel at the bow and the 388 is two and a half inches wider than the 368....... All the information doesn't include the bussel/transom extension... I have both ready to start rigging/paint and can be ready for early summer.

The bussle is not included in the length of either boat.

Bingo. The depth of the tunnel on the bow usually depends on how much they cut down too. Mine is cut down more-so than some others I've seen, which was requested during the design phase.

Purely for fyi: The option on the rear isn't a "bussle", as it doesn't act as a cowling. It's a "tunnel extention", & part of the tunnel/hull itself. It's designed to pack the air further down the tunnel, as well as make the boat perform even better in rough conditions.

Good info, thanks Blume! Great, now I "need" a 388 too... :lolhit:

I agree with you on the tunnel extention part, however I was referring to the piece that comes off the deck to make the transom a little sexier and more aerodynamic looking. That's what I was referring to as the bussle

The bussel is not included in the info I gave on the difference in the two boats. It would make both of them longer from front to back but no difference in wet surface. Here's a few pics of bussels, two on a 368, one 388 and a 40'. Most of the Skaters have the bussle/tunnel extension as shown below.

The man!!!!

I may be wrong, but I thought I remember Pete telling me the tunnel extension did not do anything, strictly there for cosmetic purpose.

stainless 01-12-2011 11:23 AM

Ah....... a pic of the infamous slw 388! Sweet!

Yeah I knew what you meant, but was trying to clairify for the others that may have been confused. Didn't mean to sound like I was disagreeing with your comment.

I think of a bustle more as what MTI can add to their 42 that make them a 44. The top portion that covers the drives, etc, but stops just before the chines:

Peter told me the same thing when i inquired about the 50 over the
46. Come to think of it I ran with Danny Desantos new 2010 40ss
this summer. A couple of weeks ago i Complemented Peter on how Bad A$$ the tunnel extension and the extended decks above the transom. Quote " its all cosmetic makes no difference in performance."

Im with Blee on the tunnel extension theory so I was somewhat
surprised on Peters response.

Yep.

They are actually 1000+hp, and are being rebuilt right now. One of my best friends built & owns it.

No specific reason. Alot of these guys enjoy building the boat as much as running them. I get too attached to mine....:drink:

If Predator sold, he would build another Skater, maybe with a few changes, maybe not. One thing for sure, like most of us who own Skaters, Peter will build him his next boat.
