These people ever heard of natural selection and evolution?
If the water is too cold then any animal with any sense and reason for living would find a new habitat.
Its bad enough we coddle stupid people but to coddle stupid animals takes the prize..

Not only that i would imagine its probably not a good idea to interfere with it either. If instinct doesnt provide for survival it should not be altered to be dependant on an outside means.

When we moved to Brevard Co. Fl. in 1990, the $TM club was just coming onto the Manatee scene in a big way. They came to Brevard co. and said that the power plants warm water discharges were BAD for the manatee,(DUH!) because it disrupts their natural migration pattern, (South to the Caribbean for the winter). Fast forward 10 years, and the $TM are the ones who SUED the state of Fl./FPL and WON to have the heaters installed, what a flip/flop.
It's the $TM Club that's the major problem, bunch of POS's and liars!

there is a sign at the boat launch in my neighborhood warning about manatees, there is also one somewhere else but I can't remember where...asked the wildlife and fisheries officer this year about it and he had no clue! :grinser010: I'll take a pic next time I'm down there and post it here. I want to take it down and put the sign in my boat slip at the camp:lolhit:

Do you still have to idle with jet drive boats and PWC's? I suspect you do, just had to ask.

Yep,
It doesn't matter what type of propulsion system you have.... The main KILLERS of manatees are the BIG commericial Tugs and the barges they push, Manatees can't hear them coming and they get crushed or mauled by the HUGE props that are on the Tugs.

Here's the follow-up article in the paper this morning.

I live in Ga so excuse my ignorance, but why is everyone so up in arms about this issue? Does it restrict alot of the waterways in fl? Really I'm not being a smart azz, I just don't understand.

Go to www.cffw.org and that should help answer your questions.
Bottom line, there are thousands of miles of Manatee zones in Fl's waterways now, thanks to $MC and Jimmy Stuff-it!:angry-smiley-038:

So they are in waterways used frequently by boaters? I guess living here we think of boating in fl as being in the ocean. In these waterways is it all idle speed? That would be the pits. Is it getting worse for boaters or is it something that has been in place for a long time?
The waterways you are speaking of, are they the way to reach open water?
Thanks for educating me.

TS,
Yes to all your q's, except some of the channels in the rivers are 25 MPH Max speed.

The biggest one being the intercoastal waterway, originally designed as a water freeway from Miami to the north is now a water crawlway due to the misplaced efforts of a few people..

gmhdfan 02-03-2011 01:19 PM

And Miata was also ordered to forfeit to the government the boat he was operating when he killed the manatee.

Anyone else find this very alarming!!!!!!

It would certainly alarm me and anyone with a half million dollar boat. I can't believe they would have 25mph speed limit on a waterway that give boaters access to travel north of Miami.
Is there any groups of people that speek out for boaters, are they getting anywhere with it?

fasttoons 02-15-2011 05:21 PM

We need to get a handle on this-

Any groups working to stop them?

The environmentalists are destroying all boating activities in South Florida. They have manatee zones EVERYWHERE on the intracoastal now and it's only getting worse...
