Actually, 100% of the cars at BJ are no reserve. My uncle is the head of consignment for BJ and this is a fact.

Also, there is no way to get out of a bid. If you are not pre qualified to bid a certain level, they will not accept your bid and if you win an auction, you are signing a legal contract in less than 1 minute after the hammer drops to complete the purchase.

They only show the high dollar, high energy bidding sessions. 98% of the vehicles come through at no reserve, and some cars come in early in the morning or later in the day when the room is empty. I sold a car at BJ a few years ago and got 30% less than I was expecting because the car was suppossed to run at 3:00pm but didn't run til 6:30pm. It was cheaper to just sell the car than to buy it back. I have also sold a car there and done very well, it just depends.

I was in Vegas this past year on business when BJ was in town. I had a morning free before flying home, so I spent $20 to get in. It allowed me to walk up and down and look at all of the vehichles, and it allowed me to view the auction (not bid, just view) held at Mandalay Bay. I believe that it was a Friday morning. It was definitely an "off" time as it seemed like there were some great deals if a guy were looking for something cool to drive around town in. Quite a few sold for well under $20k, and you know that somebody had two or three times that amount in them.

No reserve is the policy- but I have seen a few cars go off with a reserve. They are usually very high dollar cars, rare cars owned by a celebrity, etc. If you are bringing a car that generates a ton of publicity for the auction, the auction is going to make sure that you don't get burned, one way or another. I saw a car once owned by Howard Hughes that had all this wacky equipment in it, and that one was auctioned with a reserve.
