Getting closer to paint!

My guy continues to get the batboat prepped for paint. Hopefully I will be able to post some before and afters soon!

That said, he is giving me some choices on the paint. I am having it painted "Synergy Green" (the color on the new Camaro). When I discuss the cost/benefit at the paint store, i am looking at using a base of 4th Dimension to be cleared with Euro Kwick Transtar 7211. The guy at Sherwin Williams sells a bunch of it, but has limited experience with it on a fiberglass boat. By no means is this a "high ender" boat, I just want it to look decent. The boat will be run but will certainly spend much of its life on a trailer in one of my garages. Any comments on the choice of paint/clear?

Thanks in advance!

Look forward to seeing pics...Use IMRON to clear that bad boy

Transtar is a midrange clear, they sell a ton because of pricing. Its a decent clear but most Transtars i have used i wasnt really excited about. Seemed to shrink and die back a lot. That color will tend to magnify imperfections so make sure its well prepped.

The guy doing the work sees chit that I would have never seen and he is working on it. the only real problem area that we have found is that there is some very slight spider cracking just above the bulkhead. On the backside, the glass looks good, but when he climbs into the bow and looks at it from the backside, he sees where it might be weak. he is going to get in there and fix the problem first, and then repair the spider cracks.

Dave, if you could PM me your phone number again, I would really appreciate it.

Besides the paint getting closer, I am also picking up my new 383 stroker tomorrow. We are installing the merc tunnel ram and the Scorpion fuel injection system. I have the motor painted entirely black.

So you would still like to see the PPG's basecoat DBC system with DCU 2021 clear used? Any idea on the pricing on the paint and the clear? I am not going to let $500 get in the way of this looking good, but would rather not spend it if I can get good results with other.

Thanks

House of Kolors is always a good choice for custom work. Can't wait to see some pics of it:)

Lol I see ya caught my first response, actually I changed that when I saw you were shopping a specific system. Yes I prefer DBC and DCU2021 to pretty much anything but House of Color is up there to and at that level its down to personal preferance. Because you are using an OEM color might be easier using PPG. If you were looking anywhere to trim the budget a bit in the paint system and still get good results you might see if the basecoat is avaliable in PPG's Omni or Shopline and use the high end DCU clear but you might be stuck using DBC with a color like that. I will look at the formula in my mixing systems software and see what its available in. I'll pm ya my number again.

I am certainly not locked into that exact color, but I like that shade of green with the metallic in it. Since I am not matching anything, I'd be open for any brand that will do the job at a decent price. We will also be doing a tow vehichle in the same color.

I appreciate the input.

Jeff

Dont Skimp on materials, Glassdave, and Active Thunder both do a LOT of this stuff on boats, and in the past I have done Many cars(and a few boats) DBC and DCU2021 is the way to go, materials are cheaper than labor if ya gotta do it over. if a few $$ is gonna break you, I have had good results with matrix systems http://matrixsystem.com/, but that is if you have a distributor near you.

Wildman_grafix 01-20-2011 09:15 AM

I do a lot of custom paintwork, not on boats but smaller stuff. I love House of Kolor, candies, pearls, colors and specialty paint but always use PPG for everything else. Not real found of there clears.

Every time I try another clear I end up going back to DCU2021. I have tried the Omni line because everyone seems to think stuff should be cheap now (My paint prices have increased this year about 25% to 30%), but it just isn’t the same. The one difference is I am usually trying to bury paint edges, airbrush, and artwork so I need a high solids clear.

Omni doesn’t look to bad, seems to spray well but is a bit thin. I really think you get what you pay for, another question you need to ask yourself is how long do you want it to look good?

36Tango 01-20-2011 05:14 PM

I was going to today but ran out of time. I will check into the PPG line tomorrow. I appreciate all of the input.

302Sport 01-20-2011 06:06 PM

Matrix is ppg. Just about a third of the price. They even have their own house of kolors stuff. Do some research and you will be surprised. Even has the same numbers on the tints. Anything you can get in ppg you can get in matrix but most people wont tell you that cause they want you to buy their expensive stuff.

overlimits 01-20-2011 07:02 PM

matrix is a good way to go to save sum bucks, sprays just like DBC, and they have a clear like 2021, MS-20, we use it often.
remember the color you speak of is a tricoat, I would try to find a similar color in a 2 stage if your on a budget. good luck with the project, and post some pics of it finished love to see um.

302Sport 01-20-2011 07:05 PM

I'm using the matrix equivelant of ppgs oh so orange. Paying about a quarter of ppgs list price. It is a tri stage with a orange base, Pearl, then clear

I think that it is just a base clear and is not a tri coat. Where do you buy Matrix?

I also do custom work on show bikes and cars and I love HOK. Everyone is right Matrix is really good also. Can't wait to see some pics. I would love to paint my boat, but by myself it would probably take me a year the way I want it. Just curious, how much does it cost to paint a boat?? How much paint and clear does it take?

Synergy Green is a tri coat and is very difficult to repair, it also depends what the base is in the tricoat system as to how tough a repair is. I have had good sucess with GM (Cadillacs) pearls and reds as far as fixing them but it was because the base was very close to the final color anyway. There may be a two stage base/clear variant for Synergy though.

Just make sure its done for desert storm.... oh yah!:coolcowboy:

Huh, I was thinking that it was just a base and clear. Like I say, I am not matching anything, so there is no sense in making it too complicated. A base/clear is fine, I just need to find one in the color palate that is close to synergy green. Unfortunately I was in Florida last week on business so this week has been too hectic to dig too deep. I will try to find a local PPG dealer tomorrow.

The prep work continues!

You might want to look at house of kolor.

Something like their PBC 38 lime time pearl, it's a base clear coat.
But you do need a solid color sealer before you spray the pearl.

Check out their website, it has color samples.

That is what my dealer told me also, but he said don't repeat it:evilb: I have shot a lot of PPG in the past, and it seemed to shoot the same to me, even smelled the same, but what do I know, heck I been sniffing paint.:lolhit:
