In that order!

Love my snap-ons, great tools. I only have a few Matcos so can't comment. I keep a craftsman kit on the boat, and in the truck, they are good tools, but I find myself breaking and wearing them out more frequently than the snap-ons when I use them in daily service.

One thing to consider is warranty availability... if you don't have a local snap-on guy, it can be a PITA to get them fixed when they do break. Craftsman is easy, just run to Sears :drink:

Ebay Ed 01-20-2011 01:57 PM

thats the box i wanted only in black but the shop i worked at wouldnt allow it as it is to big that thing is over 10 foot wide like it is and if you could buy it for 10K that would be a steal

B4 i sold the old shop the SNAP-ON truck rolled in every 2 weeks and we replaced any lost tools (lost tools = grew legs and walked away ) bought any new products or he did replacements on broken ones ... the boyz been at the new shop since 2004 and have never seen a SNAP-On truck drive by or even stop in. Sears is 5 mins away but i dont think they compare but what do i know :lolhit:

Ebay Ed 01-20-2011 02:09 PM

comparing snap on to craftman is like comparing a lamborghini to a yugo no comparision if you make you money with tools snap on is the only way to go if you tinker craftsman are fine you need to call snap on and tell them to have a dealer start stopping by they may not know you exist

Having owned a tool business for 7 years, heres what I know.

Yes buying a complete box on craigslist can be a good value.

If you work in a shop buying from the trucks on weekly payments is the smartest. Whoever services you the best deserves the most business, because you are paying for the service.

All the tools from the trucks are good. Craftsman are for home use not commercial. They will not hold up.

Snap on, Matco, Mac, Cornwell, are the four mobile trucks. Snap on makes some tools in america
Cornwell makes more tools in america
Matco and Mac dont make any in america

All four share many specialty tools made by a third party branded for each company

Cornwell is the oldest, then snap on, then mac and matco
mac and matco used to be the same, then they split

Everyone will have a brand preference but the big four mobil trucks are all good. Craftsman is not as good quality, selection, strenth, but fine for some things. There are so many variables to include, depending on each persons situation.

i dont do enough work on cars to justify the cost my box is about 1 step below that one but i have a top and bottom box and they are full of 95% snap on but i pretty much hate working on cars anymore yet i have a honda in my garage i just finished a tune up on about 10 minutes ago LOL

If you buy a box from Craigslist, be sure it's payed for. There are a ton of guys selling their boxes when they still owe a fortune on them. The guy can't legally sell it without paying it off. Ask to see a reciept. You could get in a position where Snap on repos your new box, or you could get stuck paying the rest of the bill on top of what you payed the original owner. Just protect yourself. My Snap on guy said it is getting really bad lately and Snap on credit is really cracking down on it.

+1....the Snap-on dealer should be glad to hear from ya...have a relative that has two trucks.....I own some snap-on/blue point tools and I'm steadily increasing my stash:drink: they are the best IMO.

Yes and while the serial number can be removed on the r Matco boxes ,Snap-On might still stamp there's in though if the serial number is removed there is no warranty at all on the box.i really don't see the companies knocking on your door to get it back though. If any one needs a Matco serial number run let me know.
I will post more later still working.

Snap-On are the best for sure. They are stronger, lighter and easier to wipe off. I have a full set because I used to wrench for a living. I wouldn't recommend them for home use though because of the trouble getting them replaced. A Snap-On dealer isn't going to keep stopping by unless you are buying tools regularly. I have accumulated a small box of broken Snap-On tools over the last few years that I don't know what to do with.

offshorexcursion 01-20-2011 03:45 PM

YES you must check to see if there is a lean on any tools or the box when buying used! You wouldn't want someone screwing your business would you?

Every Tool Company will warrenty/replace if you ship them to them. Yes its easier when a truck shows up or driving to sears. But you can ship them in and sometimes they will send a prepayed shipping label for you.

Its so funny how many people get "brainwashed" Snap on. They all talk big but when you look in their box its not all snap on. Snap on is the most expensive but not always the best. They have moved the most manufacuring plants out of USA to other countrys, thats what they are the best at. They get the most lawsuits from their dealers. They have the most dealers but also have the most that go out of business (and yes percentage wise its still more then the other 3!)

Ebay Ed 01-20-2011 03:52 PM

i wouldnt be worried about the dealer trying to take the box back if you bought it i would be more worried about it being stolen if there is money owed on it they should just go back on the guy that signed the loan wouldnt be any different than buying anything else that could have a loan against it

What company were you with?

Ebay Ed 01-20-2011 03:55 PM

Snap on does not do anything for their dealers except for screw them the company / finance company loans to anyone and then when the " mechanic " and i use that word loosely doesnt pay his bill they charge back the loan to the dealer that " sold " them the tools and the dealer gets stuck with the boxes and tools if he can repo them that is why the big turn over in dealers

Snap on hand tools are the way to go, their electronic and other testers are all rebranded... My infared temp from snap on was about $240, went to the parts store and they had the identical one, even the same colors for about $80. Think it was a raytek??

That being said I have a Mac tech 1000 roll cab filled with 95% snap-on and maybe 5% Mac. Then I have an old snap on box with all the misc tools and testers.

at the time i got it the matco guy dropped it off the back of his truck because his lift gate was not long enough..i was his first customer that day and he told me what happened so i went to his house that night and looked at it..He said he ordered it for one of his customers and matco shipped it to his house instead of the dealer he worked at so he tried to put it in his little truck and it fall off..i offered him 3k for it and he ran it past the head honcho and said sell it to him...it was a 9k box at the time so 3k was a deal for a box at the time with a little dent in the side....

Actually Snap-On can only charge back 25% of there extended credit contracts.Unless the dealer co/signed it.Then its 100% Matco is zero charge back for bad extended contracts unless dealer co signed it.But they take 9% on the front end from dealer. Then the very competitive interest rate of around 18%

How long have you been doing the Matco gig? I have really thought about doing something like that. I checked the website and they say they have some franchise opportunities in Ohio...
