Market research into car sales, can it mirror boat sales?

Young kids aren't interested as much in cars anymore.....does this have an impact on boat sales in 10-15 years too?

Toyota USA president Jim Lentz was at the 2011 Automotive News World Congress last Sunday, discussing his improved outlook for Toyota's fortunes in 2011. But during the course of his speech, he brought up a challenge Toyota faces in the years to come.

"We have to face the growing reality that today young people don't seem to be as interested in cars as previous generations," said Lentz. "Many young people care more about buying the latest smart phone or gaming console than getting their driver's license."

But Lentz, along with the media, is completely missing the point. As an example, MSNBC ran a story in November that suggests a lot of the same ideas that Lentz's speech parroted: Kids aren't interested in cars. "A confluence of events," reads the article, "is pushing some teens and twentysomethings to opt out of what has traditionally been considered an American rite of passage: Owning a car."

Its not a lack of interest, its a lack of money for a car. Because the kids are too lazy to work for anything.

Not sure about that. I have 3 kids (20-24 year olds) that currently work for me. They all have I-phone/Droids, play online video games but drive junk. One kid traded a Pontiac Bonneville for a Kia Optima (new), one had a beater Ford Ranger and the other has a 15 year old hand me down Acura.

These guys are making 30-33K a year and don't even talk about cars.

I have two son's, the older one (26) is an engineer and buy's his vehicles (Truck and SUV) based on his needs and doesn't really get into cars... The younger one (21) is a total gearhead, he has a Jetta GTi and an A6... He's the one that always know's what's going on in the car world and also get's into boats like his dad...

Part of the problem is car's are either generic and plain or too expensive for most of the younger generation to buy. That and there are so many other things to occupy them rather than which car or boat to get....

I've havent been into cars since high school. I've owned some cool ones but they really do nothing for me unless it's an S65, lambo etc. even then it really isnt too interesting.
