My advice to you is go to a couple shows this coming season and look around, look into each schedule pick the ones you would like to vacation at, because done right it can turn into long weekends away. OK, now that you know racing cost a fortune, start off by attending races.
There are always teams looking for help, Start off by going to the pits. Most of the smaller teams (class 5 and 6) race on a (tight) budget, and appreciate any help they can get. "Pit Lizards" are always helpful-weather its helping launching the boat, moving the trailer, running for parts, etc.. This is a good way to make new friends, learn about racing, and have a great time. Even if you're not with a specific team, helping at the ramp or the crane is always appreciated. Although there isn't any money helping out, you will make some wonderful friends! Once you show up a some races and help out, this is how you here about someone needing a driver or throttleman for testing, or a position open for a race. Good Luck, if you have any questions, PM me. Come to the Miami Boat Show and check out P1 USA's new one design 28ss. The purpose of the creation of this boat is to offer a entry level into PROFESSIONAL & COMPETITIVE offshore boat racing.

such great input and help from everyone, i can already see the community of this sport is devoted to what they do and want to help each other out which is so awesome, to add I'm only 20, so there's really no cash in my pockets unfortunately and in reality if the sport was cheap everyone would have a nice boat with a rig so i guess i will slave away in a cubicle for a few years to have sufficient funds and take the route of just trying to get my name out there, if its meant to be i suppose a door will open for me and I'm sure you guys can agree
