Wanted: Performance-Boat Upgrade and Restoration Projects

All,

Offshoreonly.com will be expanding its editorial presence significantly in the next few months and I am working with the site to develop and implement those initiatives. Among the new editorial offerings will be a section dedicated to covering performance-boat upgrade and restorations projects.

If you are planning an upgrade or restoration project, currently in the middle of one or have one completed that you documented—with pictures—along the way, I'd love to hear about it.

Please send me an email if you think you have something that might be of interest. The project doesn't necessarily have to be large scale. It could just be something that was simple yet effective.

Look forward to hearing from you. Best,

Matt Trulio

I have a friend who has gone pretty deep into an old 10Meter. I would love to see it in print. Don't see your email address as a non-paying member of the site. Please contact me at

I did significant upgrades to my 2005 Donzi 22 Classic which I purchased new from Pier 57. The project started 3 years ago with an Imco shorty and labbed Bravo 1 prop. Then came the switch from the 496 to a 525 EFI which included strengthening of the hull. Then came the Bravo XR upper and full Zeiger steering and some small things like a sea strainer and SS raw water pump. The project is complete except for installation of the new wiring harness to get all of the gauges working. I also did a major mod up under the bow to open up that area for use without adding weight. Most of these projects were documented on Donzi.net with lots of pics. I would be glad to share my story if you are interested.

What about the Still Crazy Restoration.......great story behind the project.......

Hey Matt,

Glad to see it's all coming together for you here on OSO !

As a friend, I didn't want to see you wasting your valuable time last year at that other place and happy for you here...

Best of luck with the new column... :drink:

I look forward to reading it.

Not sure if any of my projects fit the column, but will provide the links anyway:

PM me if this is of interest and I can send you some pictures.

Matt,

Would a 84' Baja 184 SS be interesting enough? Fully photographed every step of the way, and hoping to have it ready for the spring.

Matt.....HORBA is starting the resto on the 1969 32 Cary as The Cigarette.

We have many of the original photos from Michael Aronow to assure the correctness of the resto.

Probably the most famous offshore raceboat in the world.

I'll be at the Miami show on Thurday if you want to chat.

I own 1 of 15 Bertram 38 Competition made in the USA, 1975. AKA Needle Nose III.
I have been restoring now for several years and been in a few poker runs around Fl. Problem is, I feel it is not priority to pay Membership fees. Hens no pictures are alowed on OSO for uploading. There has been others posting of my 38 do to they have a membership.
Being that said, i would love to join the band wagen here if I could upload Photos of the Restoration.
I plan on going to the sunny Isle event in june I belive with my baby, so once again exposer will be be there.
I have been with OSO since Dirt, Oct 2000 with steve, ever since I belive 2006 when fees where inposed I left and went to SOS and speedwake. All are great sites for info and parts.

Pete has some photos of me at Jacksonville poker run in 2009, they are great helo shots of my B38 and damn proud of what I have acomplished with the tight bugdet I have.

Email me if interested @ [email protected]

I feel like Flounder in "Animal House" when I say, "This is going to be great!"

I will be in touch with everyone who responded in the next week or so. The response has been amazing. All of these projects look worthwhile.

When I get in touch with you, I'll ask for an email address other than your account on offshoreonly. I'll be sending you a basic template of questions in word document form. You can download it, fill it out and then send it to me.

The form will make the process more efficient. That way, when we do a phone interview—and I'm looking forward to those—I won't have to waste time with a lot of dumb questions.

CcanDo 02-09-2011 04:07 PM

Matt, Please consider "Dueclaws", a 40' Flat Deck Jaguar.

The total project is well documented VIA the Jaguar Forum. I'm sure there is much more supporting information available.

Another similar candidate, Hot Pursuit. Well documented by a skilled individual.

Both of those successful, Ex-Race Boats deserve recognition !!

fantastixvoyage 02-09-2011 04:09 PM

This reminds of why I used to read "Hot Boat" and the likes. Always liked the how-to and project build right ups.

Be cool to do writeups on how unique models came to be - mystic, statement, RF's new models, etc.

Way to think outside the box Matt. I would offer my projects but boats will probably be obsolete by the time mine are done. lol

Scooter 02-12-2011 12:00 PM

This is a great idea for sure.

Any resoration feature would not be complete without a Lip-Ship Cigarette; the 24 Firefox that was recently completed is beyond compare and has a great story behind it as well. There are many other Lip-Ships to choose from and Phil will start an updating project on my new to me 2004 Gladiator after the boat show run is completed.

starts with "how to install an enclosed head in a Gladiator....."

just kidding....:D

Any of Phil's redos are spectacular. I really liked that straight bottom gun redo.

You'll see...but will be done in phases as I don't want the boat out of commission for too long.

Restoration/Project Story Update

All,

I spent the early part of today responding to your suggestions for restoration/upgrade stories. Most of you should have received an email from me.

One reminder: If you did receive an email from me, please do not respond here or via private messaging on offshoreonly.com. The mail server/service here is too cumbersome, and doesn't have the bandwidth, for the volume of email I will have to deal with for this project and others for offshoreonly. com.

So please use the email address I sent in my email for correspondence going forward.

If you did not receive an email from me, it doesn't mean your suggestion didn't have merit or that I won't pursue it at some time. However, the people who have projects currently underway or recently finished and have not already been featured on this site are my first priority. I want to do the best job possible in bringing you fresh restoration/upgrade projects.

Thank you all for you patience. This is a substantial job and, as I said in my email to those of you who received one, I have to be organized and methodical or it will swallow me whole.

Please keep the restoration/project story ideas coming. Best,

Matt
