Check out my Nighthawk Thermal Infrared Camera that I just installed on my 28' Skater. Tried it for the first time the other night and it is awesome. Being able to see in total darkness and see things in the water like coconuts/markers etc like it was daylight is amazing. What do you guys think?

Very cool DR! That def. has some marketability potential.

FuelinAround 02-08-2011 07:33 PM

I have thought about ordering goggles several times but I love the look of this. Not sure it would be as functional as the goggles IMO but very sleek

Double Rigged 02-08-2011 07:41 PM

Problem with googles is that their not thermal. They work off amplified light. If someone hits you with a spotlight you go cannot see. Thermal camera are unaffected by lights. That is why went this way.

very cool!

Do you have a link to the manufacturer?

Double Rigged 02-08-2011 08:07 PM

They currently do not have a website yet. It is a new product coming out at the Miami Boat Show.
I am doing some testing for them.

Jesse James 02-08-2011 08:11 PM

Does it pop up like a cleat?

Double Rigged 02-09-2011 06:37 AM

Yes, the beauty of it is it is totally flush with the deck when in the down position. The plate is polished like a mirror. The camera then comes up and locks into position with the press of a switch.

Great Idea ! Would love to have that technology.

Reminds me of Stepbrothers movie........
" Holy Santa Claus Sh!t !!!!"
"How cool would it be if we had these when we were kids ? Even better, we got 'em when we're forty !"
"The thing with the goggles is they're not that noticeable when they are on your face !"

LOL !!!

BLee 02-09-2011 07:06 AM

Definitely cool, but it would be useless for me since I don't run the Skater, or really any boat at night. Oh well.

Thats pretty cool, i often wondered how that would work. How do your eyes make the transition from looking at the screen to looking ahead into the darkness when you monitor back and forth? Do your eyes adjust quick enough?

Nice set up, but that has been done before and engineered in house here at ol. Had it in Miami show 2010. works very well at speed as well.

Agreed definatly cool! But useless for me too.
We get some long midnight runs down the Mississippi and I am the type of person who would rather trust my eyes with a spot light than looking at a screen.
Maybe an offshore situation I might trust, but not a river.

I designed this one to fit any application and it is adjustable so you can install it on a boat that is transom heavy or one that runs flat. Latham Marine did the fabrication and it is super strong. It will debut to the public at the Miami Boat Show.

Camera blows away what you can see with a spotlight and your eyes. If you ever used one you would be a believer.
That is why they use them for search and rescue.

Are you able to adjust the range of temperature you are viewing, I use a Fluke TI55 at work, I think it is a great concept but in the range of temps are too broad I would be afraid that things with similar temps wont be recognizable.

bigboat28 02-09-2011 11:50 AM

Just curious but how much is one of them?

In regards to some questions the unit is not adjustable regarding temp range but it is able to sense very small differences. You would see crab traps in the water. You can see the warm water out of a stern drive in the prop wash, or foot steps on the carpet.
Retail for the unit is $6995.00

Me 2 ,I idle at night

I would think it would give ya a false sense of security, and it wouldnt have any peripharal vision.I guess you could have someone else watch it.
