what type of marine battery??

Bought a 90 powerquest 290 enticer last winter and wanted to fill everyone out about marine batteries. The previous owner just installed brand new autozone marine batteries, two cranking and on house battery. Im not a big fan of autozone...anything. I used to use stoway marine batteries in my previous boat (24' baja) but don't know where to get them now. Any suggestions on good marine batteries??? I know there is really only like 3 makers of all batteries. Whats everyones take on this subject??? Don't need the best, dont want the worst!!

Interstate - period... They last much longer than any other battery I've used.

Fixx

I got 10+ years out of my interstate's..i will be replacing them with another set of interstates..

97FASTech 02-20-2011 06:33 PM

stowaway? Stowaway batteries are at Tractor supply. Sam's club has a great Interstate RV/Marine battery (625 or 675cca)for I believe $75 or $79, 210 min reserve. Sears has great batteries, but expensive. I was told buy cheap and replace in pairs every other year. Batteries take such a shock abuse on the boat. IMO

I like the AGM battery technology a lot.

This chemistry has many advantages over wet cell/ lead acids like interstates which I like as well and have on my toyhauler, .....but I dont like them as much as the AGM types.

Take a look at the odyssey line.

I have 2-2150's on my rig.

lifeline is another agm manufacturer

Just bought 4 new marine Interstate batteries - 2 cranking, 2 deep cycle for stereo. Have Interstate batteries in the fishing boat too.

290enticer 02-20-2011 07:04 PM

looks like i'll need marine cranking for the cranking batteries and a deep cycle for my house battery, for long slow draw like lights, stereo, accessories....etc. where can i get the interstate batteries at...never heard of agm batteries??

schnydo 02-20-2011 07:21 PM

Agm Are Dual Purpose The Plates Are Glassed In
So They Don't Break Apart In Rough Water

290enticer 02-20-2011 07:28 PM

wow, the agm batteries are very expensive, i think i will buy cheap and replace oftern although, i ran the stowaway in the baja for about 4yrs without any problems. I can get them from tsc for about 80 bucks

I'm going with Excide marine batteries so I'll let you know how they hold up. I had Interstate in all my other boats and they worked great.

That's some sound reasoning right there!

How about Optima? Surprised they weren't mentioned yet.

marylandmark 02-22-2011 01:27 PM

Advanced Auto has 25% off Optima's right now.

Order one at a time since they give you 25% off one battery.

D34M = $210 - 25% = $158 with free shipping

I need 4 of them.

If I order all 4, I get $52 off.
If I order 1, 4 times, I get $52 off each one for a total of $208 off.

Looks like dinner is on Advanced Auto tonight for me!

Interstates, die hards, and all the lead acids are pretty much made by one company as you indicated earlier there are only a few- Johnson controls

You'll find the diff between most standard lead acid brands is a sticker.

That will be fine. I think the manual calls for a minimum of 650.

STRAIGHTPRIORITY 02-24-2011 06:40 PM

good thread.. i am putting new ones in myself.

blackta 02-26-2011 02:19 PM

anything wrong with putting optimas in

fireguy 02-26-2011 02:34 PM

I have had very good luck with Deka Marine Batteries in my bass boat and my checkmate.

http://www.dekabatteries.com/default.aspx?pageid=468

obnoxus 02-26-2011 02:39 PM

I run Optimas in everything I own,,,, they had a bad run for a couple years but they are back on track now.

Its the only thing that will run my stereo for more then 1/2 hr.

If its just a starting battery with no big amplifiers,,,, Interstate will work just fine.

blackta 02-26-2011 03:54 PM

I run them in all my cars, plow truck, drag car and was going to put them in the boat also but was just checking into it

sleek1 02-26-2011 04:04 PM

I've had pretty good luck with Optima. I did buy an Odyssey house battery for my boat about three years ago- still going strong. I like the fact that the Odyssey can be used as a starter battery and house battery without harming the batteries life cycle.

What group size are you running for the stereo 31? Looks to be a good battery.

edit: Actually this is pretty good timing to have this subject come up.. I'm adding another battery to the 24, so I can get mounts for any size and am going to be buying a couple of batteries soon. I like that the Deka's are made in the USA.. hell, I even delivered some cast steel to thier place a few years ago. Probably going that route as I like to keep my money domestic whenever possible. Found some nice solid mounts that arn't too bad on price: http://artecindustries.3dcartstores....rine_c_10.html Not overly pretty, but I like basic.
