Insurance
Who is everyone using as insurance... I keep getting the "since you haven't owned a 25 ft boat before, we won't insure you"... How the hell is someone supposed to start or go up in size? Everyone starts somewhere..
|
It's probably the type of boat you own rather than the length. Mainstream ins. co. like Allstate, State Farm, etc. usually won't insure performance boats.
Although, State Farm insured all the boats I've owned. After I purchased my latest boat SF told me that they would not insure it. They later changed their mind. I'm thinking of switching to either Wakezone or Total Dollar. I've gotten pretty competitive quotes from both. I also got a decent quote from Boat US. Check out the "Insurance and Finance" section, lots of info in there. BTW, age and driving record can effect your rates too. |
Boat US said I didnt have enough experience. I've been around boats all my life, just never got to own one (even ran my uncles 37 foot sea ray)... but I'm 29, clean driving record too..
I told my insurance "You'll insure my bike that runs 220mph, but you won't insure a boat that goes 80?" lol... What a PITA... |
Try NBOA at nboat.com I have used them for a couple years and they have been great and affordable. I went from a 22' to a 38 and made a huge HP jump but I did have a lot of experience in lots of different boats.

State Farm insured my 29 Fountain and 35 Cig.
|
Look in the Insurance and Finance section of this website. There are several insurers.
I was in the same boat as you. My first boat was basically my Cafe Racer at the age of 26 so I paid through the roof the first year. After the first year I ended up switching to Wake Zone and am happy with the service, coverage and in particular the rate. Stacey is great to deal with and would be worth a call. Sea-Dated and plenty of others had luck with SF, but they insured me for about 3 weeks until the underwriters dropped me effective the night before July 4th - I was so pissed I moved anything from them and will never use them again for everything. My family had been with them for 30 plus years with only one or two claims (not mine, I never had any claims or tickets) and they wouldn't go to bat for me so we dropped them. |
I just tried Stacey and she referred me to a program for smaller boats with more power. I put a call in and they are looking into it. I'm going to cross my fingers....
|
State Farm has insured our 25 Outlaw, 29 Outlaw, 33 Outlaw, 42 Fountain with triple 525 SC and now has our 47 Fountian with triple 500 EFI's. Always great service and awesome rates.
|
Yeah, SF told me that the boat can't go faster than 60mph....
|
Try Allstate, depends on your agent.
|
75 mph is the cutoff for a lot of insurers I tried. I have Foremost now and have had no problems.

I put a call in to Wozencraft. I'll see what Stacy can do.... |
If your boat does under 80 MPH, Than here is another place to try as well. Westmar Insurance Services.

http://www.westmarinsurance.com/ It seems to be a thing with either the boat being too small with too much power, or something about Maryland.... I have requests still in with: IMIS Elton Porter National Marine Underwriters Allstate I have a headache now..... |
State Farm depends a lot on the agent, your history with them and how much business they have of yours.
Your main issues will be its your first boat that you have owned/insured and the fact that it has a 600SC and runs 80. |
I bought the other 25 AT from here with the 502 boat/trailer is insured under progressive under $500 per year. I have a second boat and a bike registered as well so my rate may be a little less and the boat is listed at 70mph.
Go and take a Coast Gaurd saftey class and get a safety card it will help. Doesn't really mean chit but it should help. |

Try another agent. They know both my Fountain and my Cig are 70+mph boats and I never paid more then $1100 per year. |

Got it.. Foremost insured me, good rate too.. Fhewww
|
Indian Rage, I had progressive on my boat until I had a claim, they sent an adjuster out 5 times to look at a bent propshaft & sent me a letter claiming that is normal wear & tear cliam denied. I dropped them like a hot potato have sf now, fingers crossed. Also I got a lot of flak from insurance companies about the over 60 thing on my eliminator also

Im new to the "go fast" boats, but not to boating in general. Wouldnt it be easier to just tell the insurance company the boat goes 55 when looking for rates (obviously if the boat has mild power ie 496, etc). If it only gps's around the mid 60's, its not that far from the truth ;). I cant see how they would know, but then again.....Im new to these boats. Are there any negative ramifications that can come along with doing that?

Glad everything worked out for you. Unfortunately Wozencraft as an agency does not sell Foremost in your state. I had a feeling it would be a good match though.

This is why I posted in the for sale thread for your boat I was willing to trade my HP500 for the 600 SC......:party-smiley-004:
Insurance is much easier at 500 horse power, and under 75 or 70. I use Allstate, and I had trouble finding that due to age and lack of "experience" (like you I'd been around boats forever but first owned). Offer's still there after you fill up the tank for the second time.:evilb: |
