Young Performance Marine -- A Dying Breed

It's very rare that I plug a business... but I feel this is more than justified. Eddie Young already receives a lot of good press here on the board, and for good reason.

Just as a background... Eddie doesn't know me from a fly on the wall. I've never bought a 30 or 40k engine from Eddie. Hell, I've never even bought a $3000 set of heads from the man.

I called Eddie late last year because I had heard so many good things about him on this board. I had inquired about refreshing the top end on my 500 EFIs. Eddie took the time to talk to me, for nearly 45 minutes, explaining all the details, options, etc. Unfortunately, my schedule didn't allow me to bring my motors to Eddie, but I decided to purchase the necessary springs, retainers, locks, etc from Eddie and do the motors here in my shop. Eddie was more then helpful, taking time to explain and detail how HE sets up valve springs, etc. Always at my disposal, Eddie would always answer all my questions and then some. I never felt rushed off the phone, I never felt like I was a nuisance...and the entire time Eddie knew he wasn't going to get a big job out of me this winter.

Later on in my project I needed some Cometic header gaskets, which Eddie was out of stock when I first called him. After he had received his order I had called Eddie and left him a message inquiring about the gaskets, and asking him to send me an invoice via PayPal. Funny thing was, before Eddie even returned my call, or sent the invoice, Fed Ex showed up with the gaskets.

He later emailed me and told me that he knew I was in a rush for them, and had ALREADY put them in motion before I had sent him a dime.

If that's not above and beyond I don't know what is. My job has me doing a lot of purchasing, from a number of large vendors, and all too often I feel like the world has come to the "are you buying or not" attitude. It's been a long time since I've done business with a person, or an entity, such as Young Performance Marine, and I can assure you I'll be a customer for a lifetime.

If anyone hasn't had the pleasure of dealing with Eddie, and might need anything performance marine related... pick up the phone... I'm sure you'll have the same feelings I do.

Again Eddie... thank you very much for all the time you've taken to help me out.

Beak Boater 02-25-2011 01:39 PM

Good you had a positive experience. Need more stories like these and less of the others.

anewway 02-25-2011 01:42 PM

Eddie rocks!

I've never bought anything from him, but he has always been very helpful both here and on the phone.

I'll second this.

I had a thread about a boat I have a now have a purchase contract on in the northeast. It was about the hours on the stock supercharged engines in the unit and how much time was needed before needing the top ends refreshed and the blowers serviced. His reply was one of several. I was a bit gun shy about calling him during his regular business hours but did so anyway.
He was very helpful on the phone with me and I never felt rushed or hurried to get the phone call over with. We had an easy 20 minute conversation and he was showing me things in the pic's I posted of the powertrains while we were speaking and looking at the OSO thread. I came away much more knowledgable about my potential purchase after speaking with him. He deserved more than just the thank you I offered after our conversation.
Eddie, your the man!!! Thanks again for assisting me that day.

See ya,
Kelly

Thanks Eddie!!!:coolcowboy:

Just Great - If Eddies head gets any bigger he is gonna tip over! :lolhit:

Eddie has taken care of two sets of motors for me. Always reasonably priced, always well done, and always available by phone for support. What more can you ask? :ernaehrung004:

CHAOS REIGNS 02-25-2011 02:48 PM

yep good guy alert!! he did my procharged 502 efi last summer -- did an awesome job - top notch plumbing ect....

575cat 02-25-2011 04:06 PM

I fallowed threads for the last 1.5 years about him, couldnt find any negative comment about the guy ,always seemed to help even if allot of the work wasnt coming his way. Anyways I decided to have him build my engines and they should be on the dyno this coming week , getting very excited ! he needs to post some pics on here for me, talk to you later Eddie .

Comanche3Six 02-25-2011 06:40 PM

Eddie is always helpful to OSO members with his knowledge & experience........a sure sign of a a good man.

45SS 02-25-2011 08:56 PM

575cat is right. Because of the threads like this. They caught my attention also, and the many conversations I had with Eddie is the reason he now has my three engines.

pachanga 02-25-2011 09:13 PM

I talked with Eddie once on the phone after the fact of having my engine built. He will definately get my next job when the time comes!

I carry a Eddie Young doll on the dash of my boat. One time his little head fell off when I jumped a wave. I stopped as quick as I could and turned off my engines to fix him but a kept hearing a reving noise. I looked down inside his neck into his head and there was a little bitty V-8 in there turning at least 9,000 RPM's. Brings me good luck....

Young Performance 02-25-2011 09:51 PM

Wow. I don't know what to say....other than thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. However, stop, Ya'll are embarrassing me.
I'm just glad that I'm in a position to help people out. I really enjoy talking about engines and helping guys not only fix them, but make more power from them.
I should be the one thanking you guys for letting me do what I truly love to do. Without you guys, I wouldn't be able to make a living doing this. Personally, I think I have the greatest job in the world. I get to play with some really cool stuff, charge people for it, and then go play in their boat.:lolhit:

Again, thank you everyone for the kind words. It's the comments like these that really keep me going when work gets tough and I'm still at it at 3 am. You guys are the best.
Eddie

Hey I've got a complaint! Why don't you work on 300X's!

BTW the YPM Tshirts were a big hit with my 17 year old son.

TCBoss302 02-26-2011 08:41 AM

It's threads like these that really make me sick, how am I ever going to get on Eddie's schedule if people keep starting these threads?:drink:

All kidding aside, I have had the same experience, I've not spent a dime with him yet, but he always has time to answer my questions. I will also add this, he is always posting helpful advice all over this site and many times it's like 2:00 AM in the morning. Good guy, great products/services. Keep up the good work Eddie!

Raylar 02-26-2011 12:51 PM

Take a Bow Eddie, you deserve it!

In this industry eventually the cream rises to the top!

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

Glad to hear he is enjoying the shirt:drink:
And I can work on your 300's. They may not run when I'm done with em though, but that never stopped me before.:lolhit:

I'll make a spot for ya whenever you are ready. That's why I'm usually still at it at 2 am. I hate to say no, so I get often get overwhelmed with work.

The cream usually does rise to the top after I wiggle my stick in and out of a hole......at least that's what I remember.:evilb:

Thanks Ray. That really means a lot coming from you. I am honored to be mentioned in the same thread, or even on the same website, as guys like you, Chief, Sterling, etc.
Thank you everyone for the kind words. You have no idea how much it means to me. It really make the long hours worth it.
Eddie

dkwestern 02-26-2011 09:35 PM

Eddie, In all seriousness, what are you checking at 2:55 in the link? (Wiggling your stick) Making sure the cylinders are round, and not oval from use?

Eddie, Jeremy from Canada here, it has all been said but I really do appreciate your feedback during the Procharger "build"... everything worked out 100%.....

You deserve the kudos......:coolcowboy:

That would be correct in a used engine. In this case, the block was just machined and the cylinders were bored and honed.(therefore, they should be round) I was checking the clearance between the piston and cylinder wall. The gauge is zeroed at the exact size of the piston. However much over zero the gauge reads is the amount that the bore is bigger than the piston. If the gauge reads .005, then the bore is .005 larger than the piston. That tells you what the piston clearance is. I do also check to be sure the cylinders are round after machining. If they aren't, then someone screwed up. They shouldn't be out of round, but you have to check.
You move the gauge up and down and read the lowest number, that is why I'm "wiggling my stick" so much.:evilb: It's hard to just set it in there and put it perfectly perpendicular in the bore. You have to have the gauge perpendicular in the bore to read it's largest point. Hope that helps explain it.
Eddie

Man, once I get in the shop and close the doors, that's it for the cell phone. If I open a door, any door, it works fine. Now I do burn up some cordless phones pretty quickly.:drink:

I have to agree Eddie answered a email about my small block vortec heads and setup and said call any time if i need help. Now i want to bring my boat from ct to him to do the work.

FuelinAround 02-28-2011 09:06 AM

this thread needs to slow down.....compliments raise the hourly rate :) all seriousness though eddie is exceptional at what he does and has great people skills. It's not often you find someone in business who can handle both. I can also tell you he will not let anything leave his shop until it is working perfectly...no matter how bad you want it back lol

I grew up with my family racing inboard hydoplanes since before I was born. As soon as I was able to walk, I was in the shop helping my dad and asking questions. When I was 15, we got a blown alcohol flatbottom. The engine was a little over our head, so we contacted a local engine builder and boat racer. Shortly after at the age of 15, I started working for that builder. I worked for him off and on (more on than off) for the next 15 years. After I realized that I wasn't going any further, I went out on my own. I wanted to get into efi and the builder I worked for wanted nothing to do with it. I knew that efi would dominate some day and I didn't want to be left behind.
After losing everything in Katrina, I pick up the pieces and moved to TN. I have had the good fortune of having some great people help me along the way with questions that I had. That's why I am so eager to help others. I love to read and will read anything I can get my hands on. I love to learn, so a bunch of what I know was learned through either reading or self taught. Some was learned through trail and error. I don't mind doing some research before I build an engine for the first time. The first Quad Rotor engine I built was built on paper and researched for 6 months before I ever bought the first part, and it turned out just as expected.
I don't pretend to know it all and I still learns things on a regular basis. That's what keeps it fun.
Thanks everyone for the support and kind words.
Eddie

i called eddie about a pair of 548s that i am building to make sure that i was on the correct track with my parts selection. he spent atleast half of a hour talking to me and confirmed that my cam, heads, etc were correct for where i wanted to be. he was awesome !!!! i told him that i wanted to pay him for his time, but he said that there was no charge. i think that says alot about eddie as a person.
