i would skip on baja just my opinion...for 28k or so not a lot of boat can be purchased. definitely looking at a single engine sub 30' boat for sure.

Sport 280 02-26-2011 01:09 PM

Some good, some not so good advice. Some just taking shots at Poker, not sure why, guess just some have to.

Things to consider/do when looking at a boat.
1. List where you will boat most of time, some limited time and places you might boat in the future. A good river boat may not work well on a large lake (rough choppy conditions, if plan to go in ocean consider closed cooling or plan for heavy cleaning after every trip.)
2. How many people will be going with, any over night plans, open or enclosed head etc.
3. Have a tow truck that can safely get where you want to go. Does tow vehicle need seating for several adults/children?
4. Search, search, search on line for boats of interest.
5. If at all possible take a test ride.
6. I would not buy a boat that I could not see in person.
7. Get a survey for your final selection. (Not a dealer or owner provided survey/surveyor!)
8. In current economy do not pay asking price.

Good hunting.

Very well put! Mastercraft240 has it out for the kid and must search his username on the hour to comment on something right after him. Everyone should leave the kid alone because everyone on here gives there opinion on what someone should buy but in the end the buyer can only make that decision himself.

I don't know anything on that particular boat but having 3 years seat time in one I can tell you they are a nice riding boat.
Having discussed the 280 Silencer at great lengths here, the 502 equipped many are claiming 68-70 mph...and some more speed.
The boat is a big 28, actually 27'-7" long to be exact.
Good freeboard height, the cuddy is relatively deep, good sized v birth although not a lot of head room ( you can't sit up on the bed) altogether a very well built boat.
Lots of storage under the hatch, rear seat, the closet in the cuddy holds a lot as well as a huge and I mean huge glove box.
This boat has been for sale for a long time , price has dropped, owner at this point should be motivated.
I have hundreds of pics of my boat I could send you for details and reference.- just sold it last month!!

The bimini and camper enclosure is a bonus imo.

I would think for $7-8000 more than the formula I posted your getting less boat. Not to knock powerquest at all I really like them I looked at a couple before I bought my formula and have a buddy that had a 260 legend. I may be biased tho:drink:

I know I get some BS fort his, but... Powerquests sits "bow high". They plow throught he water like Sea Rays. untill you get above 30'. Even then you have to look out from the starboard side to see where you going. I wouldn't touch a Baja if it's the last floating thing on the planet. I visited they factory years ago and I ran like hell. Some are ok. above 33'+ 38 specials are ok. Sorry to the Baja owners, just my .02. ok go and get after me... but get a better build boat. Formulas would be my choise, in the size you'r looking for. Bajas are faster but a lot lighter and the deadrise will make you sorry you sit in one. Forget running them in rough water. Baja owners will disagree, since they own one, but we mind as well help you and say it the way it is.

The pics were taken at the state park boat ramp on the north shore of Canandaigua Lake, near The Inn on the Lake.

Boat just like that just sold here for 22K but it was a 2000. You can do better than that one, or get him down some on price.

verbi69 02-26-2011 11:28 PM

Have someone close look at it to weed out the junk, as stated never buy a boat that you havent laid eyes on.

Not this one! I was off to the chiropractor every Monday morning after running my 272 in the Ches Bay slop.

My buddies PQ 280 rode much better.

Formula is a good choice too.

Sorry, the Baja, didn't mean to confuse anyone. There are so many good deals out there, and the banks still have a lot of repo'in to do. Keep looking until you find that smokin' deal, you can save gas money in the meantime cause we are all gonna need it.

sleev-les 02-28-2011 09:15 AM

I just drove 12 hours one way to buy my Tantrum. Well worth the drive in the end. I started looking and asking questions back in August and just a couple weeks ago pulled the trigger on one. I went back and forth on what I wanted for the longest time, but kept steering back to Active Thunder. When I found this one, I knew it was it.. Had it surveyed, brought it home... Now itching for warm weather lol

You also got the deal of the year on that one:drink:
Would have been worth twice the drive:coolcowboy:

I think you can do better. There are single engine 29 scarabs around that price.
