Phishing for Engine Builders

Since the Engine Builder and Phishing threads got locked before I could
post a reply I figured I'd put one here. My beef was with the fake user
wirsboguy only. IB decides penalties and what threads get locked. I
may not agree with it but it is what it is. If some of you guys are
friends with Brad Zastrow and were busting his balls for fun then
O.K. - I get that. But if there is an ulterior motive then stop. That's all
I have to say about that.

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...e-builder.html

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...-you-mods.html

In my searching for an engine builder I found out many things. First
was that if you ask the right questions you will get accurate info from
which to base your decision. None of the builders B.S.'d me or got
tripped up by my questions indicating lies. That is a good thing.
However most will not touch a Mercury EFI engine unless it is for a
stock rebuild. A few will do Mercury EFI engines but they outsource
the ECU for reprogramming. I do not want to open up that can of
worms. Some places will only do aftermarket EFI systems. Most
engine shops don't want your boat. Only the engine. That is a major
hurdle for me. Most will not do a final tune in your boat. There
again a major problem for me. Also most shops will not do any
additional rigging like exhaust or adding the hydraulic steering.
Once again a major concern for me. So who the heck is going to do
all this in a one stop shop? I found only one within a reasonable
drive. Eddie Young of Young Performance Marine in Nashville.
Feel free to add your favorite place but be sure to include what the
shop did for you or can do for the next customer.

Now on the lighter side - can we convince verbi69 or 4bus to create
a picture of an MTI sporting twin GREEN 310hp ENGINES flying an
Ateco burgee? Now that would be worthy of T-shirt art. :lolhit:

Tell me about it...Had to haul my 42 to NY to get the engines pulled, new ones built and dyno tuned, re-rig the transom with boxes and steering. Installed the new motors, fuel curve tested them in the water, sold my old engines for me and even winter stored my boat. All I did was pay and play. They do all their own mapping Merc or other systems. If it has pistons, they know what to do with it. Knows the difference between race engines and pleasure boat engines.
Not only that, he would sit on the phone for hours on end schooling me.
And!!! He wasn't even that expensive.

Must be some kinda good guy :D

I can do all that you are looking for, and then some. The only thing we don't do is upholstery and really custom paint. I would love to have the job if you decide to go that way. Good luck in your search. There are a few others that are more than capable, but they are much, much farther away then I am.
The one point I do want to touch on is the test running and fine tuning in the boat. If I don't do the install, then I will fly to where ever the boat is and personally run it. I wouldn't dream of sending an engine out without personally being in the boat the first time it ran. Obviously, I would prefer to do the install, but i know it's not always possible. I do rack up quite a bit of frequent flyer miles.:drink:

I don't want to take anything away from Eddie but a closer choice might be Riggs Marine. If you are looking at going more custom with your build, Eddie still is probably a better choice.

Since your in WI I'll second Riggs, located in Eldorado WI,

Mr. Riggs was one of the first guys I spoke to about my project. He did
not want to mess with a Mercury EFI system on a good running engine.
He will fix a hurt motor to stock specs but not give me the 125-150hp
increase I want. Mel said if I ditch the EFI he will give me as many
ponies as I can afford!

Know of and talked to MPG also. Same deal. Does not want to modify
Mercury EFI's. I can't remember if we talked about aftermarket EFI
systems or not. My friends live in Highland Park so that is who told me
about MPG

being as no one has mentioned Precision Marine in Kenner LA, I will...Mark is one of the best when it comes to computers and tuning. he maintains AJ's skater and it runs like a top and he is a great guy to boot. He helped me in making my 500efi's 625 hp,

kvogt 03-01-2011 08:15 AM

I'll second Mark at Precision Marine. He straighten out a buddies Vortec blown 500 efi motors. Made them run the way they were supposed to.

Kris Vogt

MILD THUNDER 03-01-2011 08:44 AM

If your dead set on keeping the merc efi, i would talk to tyler crockett in michigan. He' did a buddy of mines setup. 540CI, custom build, with a merc 525EFI on top of it. A few bugs along the way getting it tuned properly, but it made some real nice numbers on the dyno.

My thoughts are though, if the reason you are wanting to keep the efi, is because of turn key type performance, then leave it stock. Almost everyone i talk to who has modified their merc efi engines, and played with different programming etc, fuel psi, etc, has had issues getting it to run properly. It can be a royal PITA to have to keep sending your ecu box halfway across the county, wait a couple weeks, get it back, and hope it runs properly.

EFI systems are a dream when they work right, and a nightmare when something goes wrong. For example, you get a custom ECU program on a modified engine. One day you're out boating, and boat just aint runnin right. Something is wrong. Could be a TPS sensor, map sensor, ignition issue, knock sensor, maybe even bad fuel. If you yourself are not a wrench, who you gonna have service your boat to find the problem? Local merc dealer prob wont wanna touch it, and if they do it'll prob cost a ton to have them try and sort it all out. Before ya know it you'll be towing the boat several hundred miles to get it dialed in.

A good old carb engine might be a dinosaur setup, but when somethin aint right, its usually nothing you and a buddy cant straighten out at the dock with over a couple beers. Not too mention the massive amount of options you have to with your new power. Guy's like Mel Riggs, Eddie Young, Dave Wesseldyke, and a few dozen others, can build you a turn key carb motor that will idle like EFI, and provide many years of service. Eddie Young also does a very nice 598CI 750HP turn key EFI package.
