Bermuda....any performance boats?

Takin a cruize with the wife and kids to Bermuda in May. We will be there for 3 days. Is there anybody/place down there that has a performance boating interest that I can visit and BS with while the kids are doing their own thing? What are the best places to go while we're there? Anything I should know about that I shouldnt miss? Would like to make the best of this trip. Thanks in advance!

Some guy over on Screma and Fly restored an old 1980's 23 ft Ghost in Bermuda. I think he now has the hottest water whip in the country...

kreed 03-03-2011 01:39 PM

Ok, thats a start! The island isnt very big, Ill find that dude! :lolhit:

There are a bunch of smaller SNF type OB's there.
They are raced.
There was a thread on SNF about it.

My wife and I got married in Bermuda. Beautiful place, been there many times but it's been a few years since we've been back.

They used to race offshore boats near the airport every other weekend. The between weekends were motocross races in St Georges. They had an incredible natural terrain mx track.

Be sure to visit the Swizzle Inn, best rum punch and onion rings you'll find anywhere.

Hi Kreed,

When u land on the rock, just hit me up or before if u wish..i have a Velocity 260, so if all goes well i would b more than happy to take u around..having some engine work done so hopefully it shoud b ready...but if not, i'm pretty sure i can find something to take you out in..The boat racing season starts in April and they race everyother sunday..so hopefully u can catch that as well..but Bermuda is mostly an Out Board Boating community with a handfull of stern drives..But definately a Beautiful place to visit..

Heres my ride

thats a Challenger that was in that that pic..can only b seen by the water..that boat is located near Ross Perot 40ft fountain..i believe Perot had about 25 boats down here..lol and he actually blew up a few reefs to make a channel bigger so he could get his boat to his dock..n this is after the Govt. told him no..

But i will advise u that this place is pretty pricey..$8.50 - $9 a gallon of gas.. 35% import duty on boats that was once 55% a few yrs ago..lol but i guess its unique in it's own way with no exports what so ever, but rated one of the wealthiest countries in the world..

Order the Dark and Stormy drinks and you'll get a punch card to be punched at almost every tavern on the island, after 10 punch holes the 11th is on which ever house your at.
I've only been twice and stayed at the Fairmont Southampton both times. I did a couple of days of 4 hour jet skiing and a couple of all day fishing trips.
For the sightseeing I liked going to all the old forts and churches.
Other than the jet skis, fishing, and sightseeing I drank a whole bunch of Dark and Stormy's LOL!!!!
Oh, and I did rent a scooter once because there's no real motorcycles available for rent. It was so so.
I hope you enjoy yourself and have a great time.

See ya,
Kelly

Sounds like you guys really have a good time when u come here..but anytime any of u OS'ers come here..you're more than welcome to reach me..and i can always take u around,,the place is only a wapping 21sq miles long and 3miles wide at it's widest point..so getting around is not a problem..it's just the 35kmp speed limit that gets u..lol

I wish I'd of known about OSO before my trips, all your fuel would have been on my nickle for sure.
I'm laughing about the speed limit, nobody at the jet ski rental place behind the resort told me anything about it. But getting any speed in that bay was tough. I think they called it Little Bay but it was pretty big and the water seemed really big on the skis. Going under the worlds smallest drawbridge was cool too, and so was the shipwreck that the guy at the marina told us about.
Congrats on such an awesome place to live and make a living.
Next time we go I'm definitely going to look you up.

See ya,
Kelly

Swizzle Inn is a good time.Got my name on the wall there, two pitchers of the rum punch and a straw got me my 5 minutes of fame and 5 hours of misery.:drink: If you have the time charter an independent fishing boat. We fished for two days.Marlin,Wahoo and a couple other fish. Absolute blast. Take the kids to Cable beach for a day. Pink sand and beautiful water.Grab a snorkel a mask, and a cheap underwater camera. The reefs and fish are incredible. Jeff

Make sure to give Quincy a call when you get there, he is without a doubt one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I'm gonna make it a point to get there this year to visit him and my old Velocity, he has invited me many times but work and life seem to have prevented it.
Q stay in touch!!!!!!!

Anyone know if the cave bar at Grotto Bay is still open? That was a fun place with all the black lights on the stallagmites & stallagtites hanging and the music pumpin hard.

We got marriend at Grotto Bay, my Best Man was a big black dude that I met in that cave bar the night before. Also had an underground pond that the drunk people would skinny dip in.:drink:

What a hoot!:drink:

kreed I'm a school teacher..lol but i'll be sure to take u around during your stay here..and if u and d fam want a tour of the island i will be more than willing to take you around..

Paul, whats up bud, I still have that V looking the same as when it left Fl. Thanks for the kind words..hope you can visit as well..

qaberdeen, does Derek Simons still race offshore down in Bermuda? I remember him running a 24 Skater with tripple 2.5EFI's :drink: that flat out rocked! I remember watching him thread the needle through the old railroad trestles airborne at well over 100!:drink: :drink: Man, he could drive that boat!

...correct me if I am wrong but I believe the often played Freeze Frame footage of the 24 Skater submarining is Derek!:drink:

Good to hear, I've got pics of his boats going back to the mid 80's. He's sure got endurance hanging in that game for so long!:drink: I used to meet up with him and his buds in the Grotto cave bar years ago.

Man, we gotta get back there! :drink:

Thanks for the pics.

beautiful, whats cost of living like there compared to the states?

qaberdeen 03-04-2011 09:59 AM

Biggus, I normally see Derrick on the weekends, he also races model boats, but we are good friends, if u want me say hey to him i will..the cave is still open at grotto bay, but i haven't been there for yrs..it's surprzing the things that we take for granted when they're at your door step..

qaberdeen 03-04-2011 10:08 AM

offshore.. with limited space the land holds it's value pretty good..i believe international buyers have to purchases houses 3mill and up .. and since the dollar is on par with the USA..so it's no push over..

lets make some comparisons..lol a carton of orange juice $6.. a rav4 2005 $52000 on the road..the Z4BMW 140K 2 seater .. a house with 2 car parking maybe 1/4acre 1mill..but the wages i guess makes up for it..construction guru's going rate is $300 a sq foot..marine mechanics r $90 per hr

had guy on a talk show the other day who is unemployed says he's not working for $15 per hr lol.. but i believe min. wage is like 10-12 dollars..and since we have international business such as re insurance companies, it keeps the market thrieving..

before international business our gross domestic product was based off of tourism which was probally half the economy, but now 80% of the GDP is international business..so i guess if your in the field the $$ r rolling....

Man i chose the wrong profession..lol

after all that said..a good day of boating..Priceless :-)

qaberdeen 05-29-2011 09:52 PM

Biggus, I was talking to a couple of my mates d other day, and you're correct..that is Derreck Simons in the Freeze Frame in the 24ft skater in Key West..Apparently he had a lap or so to go to win the worlds, before he stuff it..
