Any Chevrolet Techs on OSO?

I have a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 HD 4WD extended cab truck. Only 68K miles and in great condition. This past weekend a steel brake line blew. I took it to a mechanic who advises me that all of the brake lines are brittle and all need replacement. I looked under the truck and the lines all are corroded badly. The rest of the underside shows no serious rust.

Does Chevy have a recall for this? Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks, I searched but that only shows wheels and that never appeared in a notice to me. Plus there was a tailgate cable recall which I did have repaired, but it doesn't show on the site, so the site may not be complete.

No, I checked NTSB and all they have recalled is a pitman arm. Salt states and living near salt water both have lots of issues with these. Probably cheaped out on a supplier.

Thanks Ted, it looks like I might be hosed. I'm hoping Stainless Steel Brakes Corp or someone makes a complete stainless kit. I've bought 40 year old Corvettes that didn't have this much scale on brake lines. And they weren't garage queens. GM really screwed up on this one. It's a shame, it's been a great truck otherwise except for a number of failed calipers.

I see it all the time on them,,as a matter of face i will be doing one in the am including the all the fuel lines..Rust, i hate it..

if you plan on bending your own try out of SS tubing try to find seamless tubing..the seam stuff splits when you flare it.

Thanks. Does anyone make a complete pre-bent kit?

my rear lines rusted out last year in my 2000 chevy 2500. its not fun when they blow out while driving.

Welcome to the salt belt. Nope definatly not a recall.Thats a pretty normal repair on all brands around 10+ years old that spend time in cold climates where salt, sand, etc are used heavly. Did a fair share at the dealer. At my current job we run 15+ pickup plow trucks ford, chevy, dodge. Even with undercoating we really only get 3-5 years out of the lines that are in exposed areas. That salt and brine is nasty stuff!

I'm sure glad we don't have to deal with the road salt mess. I'ts amazing how much damage it will cause on a car. In the mountain areas out west, they only use sand.

Darrell.
