Found my first boat today. That brings back some cool memories.

This is where it all started. Thinking about buying her back for skiing. Bought it in 92' and sold it to a friend back in 95' and then he traded it in for a motorcycle! Boat is for sale without engine. Do any of you guys have an idea, what kind of power I should be looking for if I want to run about 65. She ran low 50's with the 135 I had on it, but not sure, since I did not have a GPS. It spun a LaserII 23 about 5500+ rpm's, so I quess it ran 51-53 or so. You guys think a 175 can do it, or should I look for a nice used 200 2 stroke. Though it would be a fun toy for us and the kids of our friends ect. Good way for those boys and girls to learn how to handle a boat.
Boat is a 89' Feltcher 160. |
I prefer 3 liter mercs, 225 or 250EFi should do nice:drink:

Boat is a 89' Feltcher 160. Brings back good memories. I used to have a Bornett 17, which is a Danish boat that is nearly identical to a Fletcher 170. I got that boat in 1989 with a 200 HP Merc. Then later I fitted Yamaha 200 Pro-V that had been on a Fletcher 160. We did not use GPS back then, but I am sure it will break 65 MPH with 200 HP (depending on prop off course). Then later I got a Fletcher 19 (1997 model) with 225 HP (3 litre) and later again I bought 225 HP Optimax. I also tried a the 3 litre Merc 225 HP on another Bornett 17 and that is really a handful to handle, but so much fun. I would say it is too wild for the inexperienced. By the way the boat on the picture seems to sit on a Brenderup trailer, which is from Denmark, so I am wondering where you are located ? |

My 3.0 liter 225 Merc runs all day, everyday. Congrats on finding your 1st boat, I have no idea where my 1st boat is, a 1986 17' Checkmate w/ a 130 Yamaha, great starter boat for me. Dean |
I'm kinda concerned, that the weight of the 3,0 will create handling problems. The recomendation for max weight was about 350 or so punds and 115 hp if I remember correctly. Did merc make a 225 2,5 non mercury racing? Thinking about finding an engine from 98'-02'.

I have a pair of 260's that are gathering dust. one of those would really wake that thing up! Make an offer. Both good motors.

Great find, could you find Cardshark when you get a chance.:lolhit:
|
Obviously cehck the hull for rot, possibly reinforce the transom if you will let your kids use it. Kids have a way of finding something's breaking point. (I sure did)

If you are going to have your kids drive it you may not want to put huge power on, especially if they are going to be taking out friends....

No in all seriousness. The plan is to have adults go out with them in the boat. They have driven boats before with adults next to them, just not something beyond 25-30 mph. The girls are 10 year old twins, quite sensible, and the boys are 9 and 13 sooo:eek:, so no boating alone yet, especialy not with friends. I talked to a guy a few years ago, who had done something with a nut and bolt thing mounted near the throttle linkage. I did not see it, but when the bolt was screwed in place, it made a stop for the throttle and the engine would not go past a certain rpm. Could be worth looing into. |
I can personally verify that Merc makes a 2.5 liter 200 HP V-6 and they run like a champ - even when modified. I might suggest that it's alot of power for kids though. My 18 year old son with lots of boating experience still isn't allowed to take mine out on his own. I would suggest maybe a 150 - 175 HP motor would be a great choice for the hull. Then again, what's the Capacity Plate and / or the manufacturer recommend?

It is the 2,5 200 from around 98'-02' I have in mind. |

What kind of speed did you see with the Bornett 17? With the Yamaha 200 Pro-V I saw 120 km/t (74.5 MPH) consistently on the digital speedo running a 25" Pro prop from Yamaha. |
