Over 50 women

My wife said it's time to grow up and buy a cruiser. Said that we are too old to be riding around in a go fast boat. I told her that you are only as old as you feel. I feel my age and love the speed and the sound of HOT engines. She likes the sound of the engines but not the speed. Wants a comfortable boat that you can stand up and walk around in. ( including the bathroom) Chime in and tell me how many of you are women over 49 years old.

HELP PLEASE

traviss 05-24-2002 12:21 AM

My wife is 47, her best friend is 51. The three of go as fast as we can every time we go out. We all have a great time.

Dave M 05-25-2002 08:11 AM

Hey Tinkerboater,

Don't feel bad, my wife is only 36 and she is singing the same tune. If it was up to her we would have a cruiser. She usually stays home 50% of the time. It works for me, today is family boating day and tomorrow is guys day.

mcollinstn 05-25-2002 08:51 AM

I have both.

Wife (significantly younger than 49) only "tolerates" the speedboat, and even then on rare occasions. She would live on the cruiser for a solid month without griping, but the speedboat is not her thing. Cabin in speedboat is comfortable enough, but she gets motion sick in the cabin (no visual reference of horizon).

The kids are up for the speedboat most of the time. Never have any trouble getting guy friends to go with me in the speedboat.

I did have (still do, actually, in storage) a 17' outboard runabout with a hotted up Merc that was good for mid 90's (ran over 100 with a 32 Chopper, but was pure "edge of death" with that setup) and had a difficult time finding ANYBODY who wanted to ride in it with me.

Good luck with the wife. Make dang sure she doesn't get a chance to hang out on somebody's cruiser or you're in for a real problem.

skatermike24 05-25-2002 08:59 AM

Its time to find a girlfriend, thats what I would do!:D

MitchStellin 05-25-2002 10:18 AM

You know, if it is not a bigger boat, a newer truck, or a bigger house they are not happy so just tell her to make the payments and she can have whatever she wants. That will quiet them.:D

Tinkerer 05-25-2002 10:36 AM

Thats a good idea -I will have to try that. My next post will be from the dog house.

J-BOAT 05-25-2002 01:33 PM

Gotta be one or two CARY'S left around they look comfy and have alittle speed too.

fountain1fan 05-25-2002 02:12 PM

tinker put her on a fountain 38 sc or the new 48 cruser you still run over 70 mph and haveall the confrounts of home

Tinkerer 05-25-2002 06:45 PM

Fountain 1 fan-- Almost bought the 38 SC before looking at the 34 SCARAB. We didn't like the 38SC.

dyno 06-06-2002 12:50 PM

Steve get rid of the scarab and the house....buy a house on the water and down size to a smaller go fast like a 26 American Offshore! She can hang at the house and you can raise cain with the 26.
Don

blown formula 06-06-2002 01:03 PM

 My wife is 53....we just sold our 75 mph 252SS Formula to get a Blown 312 Formula......for over 85mph.
She never complains about speed, just lucky I guess!!
Maybe you could move to a Formula 400SS with Prochargers & 502's and run 65-70 mph with a 12 foot beam!!. A pure class day cruiser there!! Formula 400SS !!

formula31 06-06-2002 01:34 PM

Welcome to my world. My 33 ft cruiser runs 60, more I hope, Ill find out tomorow, makes lots of noise and the women love the room inside, especially the standup head and shower. I liked my formula311 better in the rough stuff, but this will do me better since I spend most of the summer on the boat. There are ways to compromise.

CigDaze 06-06-2002 01:38 PM

Damn!

I thought you meant OVER 50 WOMEN...Not women over 50:(

Back in 88, Jim Wynn was building hulls for Cruisers Inc and when Merc came out with the 454 Bravo package, he stuck a pair of them the 28 FT Cruiser Rogue they were making then, removed the radar arch, short windshield, short rail, beefed it up a little and the things run strong. I think they only made a dozen or so. I found one last year and love it. Did one engine this winter and did the hull to deck joint among lots of other stuff. Thru hulls, Gils, all the goodys. Called a Cruisers Rogue 2800.

Jayl13 06-06-2002 02:43 PM

Sonic is your answer
mean machines with more amenities than your freakin house
stand up showers, heads, 6'2" headroom
Engine compartment with just about any motors you can pony up for, AC/Heat/ Shore power, Fridge, microwave, Plasma TV's, Optional towel dryers (called an arch)
and starting at 35 feet on up, really nice headroom and amenities start becoming good deals

Sonics pricing definately screams affordable compared to alot of their direct compeition (non custom built boats)

Hull design's tried and proven

Take a look at one and im sure she will like it and you get your speed and she is happy with amenities and they are doing WONDERS with the airbrushing
go to their site and check it all out
Jason

My over 50 wife

We had a mid 30 foot, semi/performance sportboat that cruised at about 60, but the twins burned 2 gallons AV gas/min and she hated paying for the gas over a three day week-end. So I bought her a mid 30 foot sportcruiser and we still burn 2 gallons per minute, but only go half as fast. She likes that. So to get even with her, I make her stay overnite so we burn half as much. But she cooks and loves to wash the boat, so its working out...

Jana 06-06-2002 05:20 PM

My over-60 Mom went full-throttle with me in my Donzi. Not often, but as long as the ride was pretty smooth, she didn't complain. Hasn't been on the Fountain yet, but I'm betting on more speed and fewer complaints. All she wants is a real seat. (That L-shaped bench seat in the little Donzis isn't very comfortable for passengers.)
I just hope that when I'm over 50, I'm laying the throttles down on something that runs the other side of 100! Amenities? This gal don't need no stinking amenities!

mopower 06-06-2002 07:19 PM

My wife's 53 and imposed a 10 second rule (while she's in the boat). Wide open for no more than 10 seconds. I can cruise 45-50 all day...no complaints.

And I thought I was the only one with a weird Cruisers-it'll do 55 light too.

blueamerican 06-06-2002 08:41 PM

Wife turned 50 last year, likes going out in the Cat, but gets pissed when Iam over 90, as she says she can't breathe. Loves to cruise at 50, and just lay on the hatch cushion and get sunned. I guess i can't complain, she isn't pushing for a Sea Ray yet.

jr 06-06-2002 09:20 PM

There is a simple solution. Just buy another boat. One for you and one for you and her. Now my wife just needs to be broken in on what boating is all about. Shes alittle too up tight around them. She didn't grow up with them the way I did. Makes thing kinda tough. I keep telling her the bigger the boat the better. But she hasnt caught on to that yet. Maybe this year.

Dueclaws 06-06-2002 09:36 PM

In my humble opinion, this is not age related. There are a lot of women over 50 and more that enjoy Hot Boats. And a lot under 50 that hate fast boats. But, you have to be the judge: wife or boat. Or boat without wife.
I'm lucky, my wife enjoys our boat.

FunHome 06-06-2002 09:43 PM

At least you made it to 50!! My wife is already talking about something with A/C and she is only 27!!!

Actually I agree since we have a little girl due in November I think the only way for me to get on the water will be to have A/C for the Kids!! A couple of friends of mine have Gen. and A/C and they cove out with all of us all the time!! They have two small kids that they let swim until they get tired then it's into the Cabin to watch a tape and take a nap!! Works Awsome!!

Actually I was thinking along the lines of a 38 Special Baja, that way I could still tow it to other lakes if I wanted to!! Great Now everyone is going to be looking at them and drive the price up! Oh well, I'm still a couple of years away from a boat change!!:(

fstboater 06-06-2002 11:54 PM

I have a chris cat with blown 461s alu heads after the first ride. My 44 yr old wife took she got out of the boat with a hug and a kiss and a big thank you it halls ass now.She loves it when you hit the boost time to play always some one to play with at LOTO !!:p :) :p

KAAMA 06-07-2002 12:08 AM

WOW---Fstboater sounds like he(with his wife) is about the only exception to what most of what these other guys are saying with their wives. I think Fstboater is a blessed man to have found a wife like that. About 99% of the rest of you guys seem to have troubles with your wives not liking the muscle boats---sounds like I'm going to have to pray for one like Fstboater has---either that or I think I'll just stay single. :)

Jayl13 06-07-2002 07:48 AM

My wife loves the power, the sounds the grunt, the looks you get at the dock when your cam is bouncing off of all angles and you could wake the dead.
She HATES it that Im spending money on this but hey, oh well
When I go racing my car, she stands at the burnout box, gets covered with rubber, loves the smell of Nitro Meth and ethanol and all that weird stuff these guys are pumpin intheir cars.
The louder the better to her
BUT if it does not have an enclosed head, NO WAY, she wont sleep out on it, She hates the baja for that one reason
No enclosed head.

Like I have said before, she wanted a 358 sonic with the plasma TV, AC, Generator, DVD player, you name it, But that boat was 200 or so thou complared to my 17 thousand dollar 1990 baja,
Little disruption in the bank account,
Ill get the sonic next most likely

It seems that a lot of members are in the same position as my self. Have a Go fast,51 years old wife goes on it maybe 5 times a year, have a drag boat and she has went 2 times in 4 years, live on a lake and bought a pontoon with a fifty Merc on the back, she uses it all the time. Most of the time she has it wide open! How can u understand them? " wouldn't trade her for a million dollars but you couldn't give me another one like her!!":D :D :D

I'm closer to 40 than 50 but, I agree with Jana, you're never too old for the speed of a powerboat. It's a state of mind.
And you don't always need the amenities, just need perfectly timed lunch breaks at the local waterfront restaurant.:D

You could get a marine air from West Marine or BOAT US and when you cove out with your buddies you can plug into there 110v and run the A/C. That's what I did with the Formula and we coved out and it worked great.

Here is the answer to this problem!

Fountain 38 Express Cruiser!

Top speed 65mph + and a cruising speed of 50mph all day long.

Two state rooms and all the accommodations..

If I had 200K + I would have one of these!

I watched OCEANS11 last night and it has me thinking!
