Does this seem like a scam to anyone?

I have a set of props for sale here in the classifieds and I think this guy is interested. Here is the last email he sent. If I give him the info he is requesting is there anything that could get me into trouble?

Thanks
Don

If you have absolutely nothing better to do you can string these guys along and f$ck with them. I can be kind of entertaining. Total scam.

SCAM:drink:

jayboat 04-07-2011 10:02 AM

Definitely a scam. If you play him along, he will lose focus completely on the goods and it will all be about the check. He is already starting to reel you in with the 'limited time we have to conclude this'- his 'Accountact' will inadvertently cut the check for several thousand too much and you will be asked to reimburse him (less a little cut for your trouble).

Your bank will cash the check for you and two weeks later they will take that $$$ back out of your account when it is determined that the check is counterfeit.

I used to have an email set up just to ef with these guys. They wouldn't even notice that I responded from a different email.

It was great entertainment when work was slow. Great Ideas here...

I was the Honorable Reverend Rusty L. Shackelford when I replied, they ate it up.

There are the reliable clues in the message that tell you he's a scammer from the 3rd world. There must be a lot of people out there that fall for their scams, for them to still be trying to pull them in this manner.

I'd mess around with the guy, & send him all kinds of BS info. :lolhit:

The part that got me was he said that he would have someone come to my house to pick up the goods. He never asked where I lived...... Or where the props were located.

Run like heII. Or just have fun.

Like someone else said, they will send the check for more than the amount, have you reimberse them by mail or money transfer then you will find out afterwards the check is bad. They say they will have someone come get the goods in person to make it sound more legit. They will never show up to get it. Its all about the reimbersement money. Just screw with them when whenever you get bored, good way to waste down time!

Ask for him to have the guy picking them up, bring cash. Did that with a car once. He got really confused, and really pissed, when I told him, that it could not be an issue, since he had the money and he'd trust the pickup guy so much.

Ha- good one.

You can just about expect it to happen on craigslist for certain types of items. Happened to me recently with an old lens I had listed locally. They don't care how many email addresses you write them from. :drink: As long as you are writing they think you are still interested. They like that 'send my contact' or 'shipping agent' ploy- makes em sound 'official'. :drink:

My guy claimed to be from NYC. Wanted the wire transfer sent to a woman in Conway, S.C. FedEx delivered check for 2k (on $450. item) came from Indiana with a return address to a guy at a city water works dept in that state. Check was from a company in California and signed by a woman with an Asian name.

It all seemed perfectly normal to me. :cool-smiley-011:

He never even gave me a ship address for the lens. I guess sending and managing replies to hundreds of those every day could make one forget little details. :lolhit:

jayboat 04-07-2011 11:58 AM

I don't know about you guys, but...

I'm always cutting those pesky checks for thousands more than I meant to, and rather than cutting another for the correct amount, I always trust the kindness of strangers to return the overage to me.

Bob Smith??? Am I the only one who thinks boattest.com?:grinser010::lolhit::lolhit:

Doing some chit with bogus names and the like, is always fun. When traveling, and don't want to tell where I stay. It's usually something like The Ekaf Hotel on 66(NO) Memory Lane or some crap llike that. It's amazing how many jump right in.

Sorry for the off topic bit:drink:

Scam...I get these types of emails all the time from people with yahoo or hotmail accounts trying to buy random equipment and wanting to pay with Mastercard... We just ignore them all...

firehawkcat 04-07-2011 07:41 PM

Give the address to the police station and see them show up their

GoFastScott 04-07-2011 08:59 PM

Ah hell, have some fun with him like i did last time this happened to me. I got the check, surprisingly it was for $1500 more, he asked me to send him a check back for $1200 and I could keep the rest. I dug through my financials from 15 yrs ago and came up with an old checkbook on an account that had been closed for at least 10 yrs from another state and sent him a $1000 check from that account. He probably got all excited, ran to the bank and cashed it, I would have loved to see his face when it bounced! I had to send it overseas so i wasnt too worried about writing a bad check, and kept a copy of the bad check he sent in case it ever came back around.
