Jay, in GLH's example, one min. you are driving across the water 1/2 mile from your target. The next you are gone.

Jay may have a point, I am sure it would show up on the news about a pirate vessel blowing up.

But flying apart and sinking,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, maybe not. Same result.

Being these are not "fire arms" means other ships can carry it to.
"And our high powered laser is mounted on the Acapulco Deck next to the swimming pool."

Gotta agree with GLH, a radar guided 5" gun will make short work of any "boat".

Default Effective Range - X Miles?

I used a half mile as a hypothetical start point-

You are the captain of a (big) freighter, traveling intl waters.
Your vantage point is 7-9 stories above sea level.

Your vessel is equipped with the latest raytheon light saber...
Radar picks up the vessel at 10 mi...

*the Cole incident and the Somali pirate adventure are different types of terrorism and very different situations.

I just have this picture in my head of a beuracrat and a private security contractor saying. "Hey bob, what the most expensive way we can replace a gun"

What happens when you put a mirror in front of the laser?

If the mirror is not at the intercept point, nothing except the pirate boat will start to burn.

Default playing "what if"

if one could be built to fit into a std shipping container (or 3, for xtra batts)
deployed on routes where they might be needed

the instantaneous nature of the thing intrigues me. element of surprise and all that.
zap, zzzzzap!!!

ok, I'll stop.
