I think the 575 was a fuel injected motor. Could be wrong though.

POWERPLAY J 04-22-2011 05:08 PM

I have two LOL

SS930 04-22-2011 05:14 PM

575sc was carbed.

edit, The later 575's were efi, but the first couple of years they had carbs.

teamusa 04-22-2011 06:28 PM

575sci, was an injected motor

dodgeman111 04-22-2011 06:42 PM

So the 500 EFI is NOT a bull dog. Am I correct on this ?

Missed this one!

Sydwayz 04-22-2011 06:51 PM

Seriously, did the HP 420/425/440/450/465 GMs of the early Mercury Hi-Performance days have blue paint? I think they were all black.

Correct.

An HP500 Bulldog is a 540ci block, carbed, prime for supercharging.

465 HP. And if memories serves I built 2 with 450 hps....?

4195 04-23-2011 07:37 AM

I believe the 500HP was one of the first blue motors and as far as I can remember the 575 were with the Holley type of throttle body injection.

465hp - 502 ci and they built a limited number of 450hp - 454 ci

ActiveThunder 04-23-2011 11:04 AM

The 465s were the preface to the 500s. Snotty cam.

the 575HP 540 cu.in motor.

And are we just talking merc racing in general, or the motors that where actually painted blue? If memory serves. The 800sc, 900sc and 1000sc where painted black. They are in my old brochures anyway.

302Sport 04-23-2011 01:11 PM

AO Razor, what was the 700SC???? Never heard of it before??

WildThing47 04-23-2011 03:50 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the 700SC a hawk power plant...

I've surely never seen one..

sea2jet 04-23-2011 04:06 PM

What is the difference between the Blue and Black motors? The Blue motors are Mercury Racing, did they use better parts? Did they make more horsepower than advertised? My new boat is coming with Blue HP500 carb engines.

420/465/500/525SC/500 Bulldog/600SC/800SC/900SC/1000SC

That's all I can think of & they were all black pre-1992/3 I think.

The HP465 was a bad-a$$ motor. It did have a very snotty cam, although it was not a roller-cammed motor it did have Crane Gold roller-rockers and 2.25/1.88 valves with a 800 Holley carb.
We had one in a 226ES Baja back in the day. Nice motor. Got lots of attention at the docks with the cam it had.

There was a 800EFI also that, along with the 1000SC was sold as a "race only engine". The 800EFI had a Hillborn style injection setup on it and Pontiac style heads (I think)

Merc went from black to blue in the early 90's on the Merc Racing stuff (HP & SC series). They are all built in FonduLac, WI.
All the same stuff in a black HP500 vs a blue HP500.

Griff 04-23-2011 08:44 PM

HP575 was carbed NA engine and only made for a couple years.

Pictures?

Hp500

TURBO JET 04-23-2011 09:47 PM

When did they come out with the 1000SC motor and when did they stop making it. Also what makes it a race motor what does it have.

Yep, you're right. I built two 32s with the 450s. Found the pictures in my pile. They ran as good as the 500s.

Back4More 04-23-2011 10:24 PM

383 Scorpions...Did the first ones have carbs?

Hessdk 04-24-2011 09:09 AM

Sydwayz, the 420's and 440 Cyclone's were all black, 425's were rare, but I believe had some blue, 450's had blue valve covers, intake, power steering pump, alternator, pulleys (some blue some black), and carb (just like HP500). The 465 had blue valve covers, carb, black intake. Yes, the 465 was a awesome sounding motor. I remember in 1993 driving a new 22' Velocity with one, man what a rocket. The old school 575 was a pretty mean motor too with the solid lifters and Stellings. Ah the memories!!!!

302Sport 04-24-2011 09:38 AM

is the NA575 the highest horsepower pump gas NA motor mercury had built? I know they build the supercat motors but they are pure race motors....

Yep. I remembered the prop hp of the 800sc, and got it into my head that there was a 700sc from merc. My bad. Sorry guys.

Yes, as posted earlier. A 540 cid. motor. When I get back from our vacation, I'll find the specs if you are interested.
