Problem child survived the weekend !!

Dragged the powerplay up north to the house friday. Filled her up and dumped her in the drink.. last year with my the stock 270 hp 350 it would spin a 21 at 4600.. I had three props to test.. it smoked the 13 1/4 x 23. then I put on a 14 1/4 x 24 and she spun that at 5400. I am gonna probably end up witha labbed 25.. She is a wild handling girl... Put 6 1/2 hours on it this weekend.. The last ride tonight I had low oil pressure so we dragged her back home and gonna inspect a little tommorrow...

I felt pretty good, a guy in a baja who picked on me last labor day was back.... hehe I had 6 on board and we spanked him pretty good :)

It was a good weekend, other then my oil issue I am very happy with this motor...

Hope everyone had a good weekend...

Glad to hear that you are happy with the new engine. Hope the oil pressure problem is minor.

NASTY HABIT 05-27-2002 10:30 PM

Nothing beeter better than comming back with a vengance.....
hope your low pressure is just a gauge or sending unit or something minor..

Red Stripe 05-27-2002 10:34 PM

Hey Trav,

you left out one detail, what kind of speeds were you seeing? Major differences between the props or just the rpm being way different.

Tinkerer 05-27-2002 10:57 PM

YEA TRAVIS-- SPILL THE BEANS.

Havasu Hangin 05-28-2002 12:02 AM

very nice...

...sounds like your mighty mouse may beat up on a few big blocks...congrats on the package...which cam/heads did you end up with?

Us SBC guys gotts stick together...

:D

Oil pressure

Traviss-
If the motor is new, did you use moly cam lube for break-in? that stuff will plug a filter in about 30 minutes. Also, do you know what oil temp was?

Good luck
Bulldog aka Ronnie

red stripe... don't know speeds yet,, didn't have a GPS this weekend.. I know the stock motor with the 21 at 4600 gave me 58.3 mph.. details later on that studd.. gotta get her fixed first..

whos got the formula...

24" pitch , 5400 RPM , 1.5 gear ???

Havasu hangin.. I ended up with vortec heads and a crane roller cam 222/230 duration .509/.528 lift ( but used 1.6 rockers made it .543/.563 lift) on a 112 LSA. Rpm airgap intake, 750 holley, 9.9:1 comp ratio.. and EMI exhaust.. ,blah blah blah :D

Bulldog.. Yeah we used the Gm valvatrain lube. I already changed the oil and filter once. the oil temp is around 230 at WOT. my oil comes outta the block to the remote filter housing then to the oil thermostat, then to the cooler, then back to the block.. We think its just alot of restriction for this oil pump.. stock pressure but High volume Mellings.

we'll see later tonight when dad gets home, We have three spots to check for oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.. so we wil go from there.

Travis: Glad you like the new motor. I hope that you find the oil preasure deal to be something stupid, cheap, and simple.

At 12% slip, I got you at 72MPH...

:D

mcollinstn 05-28-2002 10:17 AM

the formula:

PITCH"/1proprevolution x 1proprevolution/RATIOrevolution x RPMrevolution/1minute x 60minute/1hour x 1foot/12" x 1 mile/5280foot

EQUALS

( PITCH x 1 x RPM x 60 x 1 x 1 ) miles / ( 1 x RATIO x 1 x 1 x 12 x 5280 ) hour

EQUALS

( PITCH x RPM ) miles / ( RATIO x 1056 ) hour

For you, this is: ( 24 x 5400 ) / ( 1.5 x 1056) = 81.8 mph

NOW, this assumes that your prop's TRUE EFFECTIVE pitch is equal to the number stamped on its side. It is never exact, and in some cases pretty far off, but in the case of a Bravo1 prop, it is usually a "good" number to use.

ALSO assumes ZERO prop slip, which is not possible. Try 10 to 12%.

This gives 81.8 x 89% = 72.8mph

Thanks guys.! Thats nice to know... I know this 24 is pretty rough lookin prop.. I wil have to find a nicer 24 or maybe a 25.. I would like WOT to be around 5200 instead of 5400... but I am gonna get this oil issue taking care of first..

on saturaday morning I was on the water 15 minutes and got pulled over by the sherrif.... once he knew I was legal and not just a punk kid he acted a little nicer... we talked about the boat and what I was doing... then he ask .. "so how fast can this go"... I said "don't know still tuning" :D :D :D he rolled his eyes and left.. surprising he didn't say nothing about the exhaust... with 50% of water going out dumps the exhaust is real loud now! :D :D

Well all looks good so far.. First thing we pulled the oil filter to see if we had junk in it.. but it was really clean.. tested the oil pressure sender and it acted wierd.. pulled it out and put in a mechanical gauge... fired her up on the hose and WHALA she has 55 PSI at idle... man I felt alot better.. looks like the sender was the problem.. still have to monitor it to be on the safe side..

does anyone have a 25" 3 blade for sale?

Hot Boat 05-28-2002 07:26 PM

Trav. glad to here all is good. You had us worried there. keep us posted on the speeds. How about a photo of problem child.

Traviss,

Does your Alpha drive have a 1.5 gear ratio?

Ron
