Police/Coast Guard

Did anyone else have problems with either of the above?? We got boarded at PIB for no reason other than we were a Canadian boat. They brought the dog on checked upside down, but never even checked I-68's, total of about 45 mins, then left no tickets nothing--which is a good thing. I was watching the news and Detroit had all kinds of warnings that they were going to do this in Erie and St. Clair, I just didn't see any one else with this special treatment.:(

audacity 05-28-2002 08:50 AM

was it the CG or the cops???

Scott 05-28-2002 09:11 AM

I have watched this happen many times at PIB you were not boarded because you are from Canada you were boarded because the dog smelled something:eek:

jb 05-28-2002 09:15 AM

did the dog mark up the boat???
Glad there were no tickets or infractions

1Boatnut 05-28-2002 09:16 AM

I was boarded last year. The coast guard does NOT need a reason to board your vessel. I don't believe it was because your boat was Canadian, but hey I wasn't there.

I do have to say with our recent events,I guess it's better safe than sorry. We would be *****in if something happened in our country by water, that they were not doing their jobs.Just my .02

Milord 05-28-2002 09:19 AM

I told you Dave, it's those big flashy boats you guys roll in on! :D

They won't bother my little dingy! I hope!

We didn't have any problems at all at Metro or Jefferson Beach.

Advantage_Rob 05-28-2002 09:24 AM

I was boarded at PIB last year, They came up w/dogs and asked me to step on the dock so they could perform a search. All I said was "go ahead", and grabbed a beer, and let them do thier job, and they searched the boat up and down, and left.

jb 05-28-2002 09:30 AM

"Advantage_Rob.... I was boarded at PIB last year, They came up w/dogs and asked me to step on the dock so they could perform a search. All I said was "go ahead", and grabbed a beer, and let them do thier job, and they searched the boat up and down, and left. "

You grabbed a beer????

BoatChic 05-28-2002 09:36 AM

del sol- didn't see you in PIB?!
We were leaving PIB Sunday at 5pm and the Coast Guard approached us to board for a saftey inspection, we just had one the week before at Metro, showed the papers/checklist and were on our way.... we did make a comment that he stopped us cause of 4 girls on a boat.

Audiofn 05-28-2002 09:51 AM

The last year my boat ran well I got borded every time I went out. It sucked and to be honest got real annoying. However there is nothing you can do but grin and bear it because they can and will. I am not at all into letting a dog run around on my boat however and there is NO WAY that I can imagine some of you guys with real nice boats wanting that done. They can do their search if they want. However if they are doing a "safty" inspection then the dog stays on their boat if you ask me. I guess they are just doing their jobs, but I started to get the feeling that is was more then that after all those pull overs. I even laminated all my boarding passes and put them in a three ring binder to show them :D:D

In Philadelphia, Pa. You will be stopped 100% of the times by C.G if you have any women on board. I noticed most of the C.G is just kids doing a good job. Down here in Philly we have to worry about the police/ State police. They lock boaters up just for a smell of beer. I was locked up last year for 24 hrs. All I had was a BAC test of 0.04 far below 0.10 to be arrested. So now almost 1 year later and 6 court days I have beat the water Nazi. Now I am looking into a possible civial law suit. This is an on going thing here. BUT! they only stop or corner HA-Ha! The speed boats. Never the huge cabin cruisers with 15 people on board.

Anyway good luck up there and have a great summer!
ahhhhhhhh that felt good I had to vent!

Just my .02

Advantage_Rob 05-28-2002 10:28 AM

Jb, It was mid-day at PIB, and I was staying the night there so why not grab a beer. My friends boat was next to mine and I hopped on there and watched them. They were cool with it, but they did ask to see the beer like I was trying to sneak something off the boat. They started a few years back walking the dogs up and down the docks just hopeing the dog catches scent of something. Must have been the italian subs on my boat!!

I wouldn't consider it a complete weekend of boating if I didn't get pulled over at least once on the weekend. I ALWAYS get pulled over. I got pulled over 3 times in one day last year, and once the next day. They are really stringent around here, but I also always have 8-10 people aboard, and a full out party going on while idleing thru the canals or pulling up to the party spots. It's almost a sure thing if they see me, they come over and check it out. All of which is ok with me, I stay sober, and greet them with a smile, in the hope that they will leave me alone if they see I'm always in check. It hasn't happened yet though.

CAPO71 - You must have perfected the "shifty look". ;)
I have been boating around Philly for 5 years, and the only contact that I have had with the authorities was when I almost blundered into special restricted areas (sailbote race, building demolition). It does help to get a "Courtesy Examination" sticker from the Coasties - when they see that, they feel that you've shown enough interest in being legit, and tend to soften up a little. It also pays to smile and wave to the officers whenever you pass by them - nothing like a friendly boater to make their day.

Given the recent spate ot on-water tragedies, everybody should do a quick double-check to make sure you've got all your safety gear onboard and in good shape.

delsol 05-28-2002 12:49 PM

Don't get me wrong---I have no problems with them doing there job-- and it was the PIB police, not the coasties. I think next time i'll bring my rottie with me so the drug dog got somebody to play with:D
Boatchic--I didn't see you either---we pulled out of B dock at 5:05 on Sunday, watched them pull up to a 12 ft zodiac with like 7 people. we just kept going. We'll have to hook up next time you're going over, I didn't think you'd make the trip considering the lake on saturday.

I guess i'm just wondering if it's going to be like this all year-- 3 times out --3 boardings.

James we weren't on anything fancy, my buddies 26 Sea-ray.

Oh well--**** happens

BoatChic 05-28-2002 12:56 PM

del sol - we stayed on C dock, arrived Friday about 2:30pm, a few back from that 50ft SeaRay.
You missed us? "5 Girls Gone Wild PIB2K2" trip #1!

We departed about the same time you did, hit the gas dock and were underway at 5pm, back to 9 mile the marina at Jacks about 7:40pm.

Bill272 05-28-2002 01:00 PM

We got stopped before we even pulled away from the dock on Sunday at the Clinton River DNR launch. Coasties just doing the standard safety/registration inspections.

Gary864 05-28-2002 02:12 PM

advantagerob; St Clair County always pulls over boats with large number of people. We want to check for lifevests and most don't have enough. As you know last year (Bad ticket written to you). You won't have to worry unless you get that boat in the water!!!!!!! I am tired of getting blinded by the glare from your when I drive by. Seriously it looks good. And I promose If I stop you it will only be to say HI.

Wardey 05-28-2002 02:27 PM

I was tied up to a sailboat about 7 miles out, I know that's suspicious, and when I was running in at about 50 mph I got into the pass. I slowed to a "No Wake" zone when my wife advised me that the coasties wanted me to "Put my Port Side to their Starboard Side and prepare to be Boarded!!!". As we tied up, we were advised to step to the rear of the boat. Now this is with my wife and my 6 month old baby and myself. They then proceeded to search my boat. Under cushions, in compartments all over "except" my personal belongings. They then lifted up my front cabin cusion and asked why there was no access hole for it and that they could drill my boat to check it out. I then spoke out that there were no drugs aboard and if they wanted to drill my boat, they had better get their check book out ! They then explained that they were not looking for drugs but were concerned that if I struck an object that the compartment could fill with water and sink. I then pointed to the decal stateing that this vessel was approved by the United States Coastguard. They filled out a long form and handed it to me and said that if I was to get stopped again, show them the paper. I was then "released" without so much an appology. I then asked why they can search my boat but not personal items seeing how to me, my boat is my personal item and was advised to move on......Wardey

Talk about B.S.

Got pulled over by the CT. DEP police over the weekend. Passenger asks why that boat way behind us has a flashing blue light, so I pull over and wait for the police boat to catch up.

First thing out of their mouths was that they had been trying to catch me for several miles,,, I told them I guess they needed a faster boat,,,, The joke didn't go over too well, they ask for registration, and tell me they pulled me over because my stern light wasn't on,, asks to see vests for all passengers, pull out the fire extinguisher, throw-able, They even checked to the labels on all the life jackets for coast guard approval... meanwhile a ski boat goes by without any lights on and a skiier wakeboarding. They pull them over talk for about 1 minute and let them keep skiing.. Talk about a B.S. pull-over.

Advantage_Rob 05-28-2002 03:17 PM

Hey Gary, good to hear all that waxing I've been doing is working. I haven't seen you on the board in a while, welcome back. I can totally understand why I get pulled over with the large crew on-board, It's never a big deal, I take it in stride and my friends all freak out like it's a major catastrophy, especially the ladies aboard.

I'm still waxin away, I'll be finishing it tonight I belive, then hopefull hit the water this weekend. I better get my trailer tags updated.

BAJA WILL 05-28-2002 11:20 PM

I got pulled over twice on saturday with in once at 11am, getting gas, again at 3pm as I pulled away from my dock. First was Coast Guard, they boarded the boat, I asked the guy to take his shoes off, since he was getting ready to jump on the bow. He gave me a dirty look, told him if he scratched it he is paying for it, then I pulled out the dig cam. He decieded to board from the stern then.;)

Second time was VA game wardens, just checked all my stuff and let me go, Told them I had been checked once that day already and it was getting old, showed him the paper the CG gave me, and that was that.

I really dont mind it when the locals on the lakes pull me over.
They either are doing one of two things.

Their job :)
Or giving me a reality check about something I might have been doing wrong.
Now don't get me wrong. I have been stopped for no reason what so ever. They just give the SAFETY check excuse. Sometimes they warrant this. Most times they may just use it to be coy.
Most of them that don't know me actually get upset when everything checks out fine. I really like it when the continue to ask 'wheres the refreshements'
Most do not believe when I as if they would like a Mountain Dew or Water. Because that is the only thing I have. They always ask aboutthe beer. None on this ride. There has only been one time beer was on any of my boats in the last 10 years. And that was at the Shootout last year. And then that was only a 6 pack for a crew member.
Be honest with them, let them know you appreciate them, remind them to be around when also needed, and most important, allow them to do thier job. Some may not like it, some may try and be POWER hounds of thier badge, but most can make or break your day. Tick them off and you are sure to be more pissed at them then they will be of you :)

And this is what went on

Canada, U.S. snare boaters for booze, drugs
05/29/02
Molly Kavanaugh
Plain Dealer Reporter
Boats, planes and dogs from 18 U.S. and Canadian agencies patrolled the waters around the Lake Erie islands over the holiday weekend looking for boaters who were drunk or carrying illegal drugs.
And they found them.
The joint operation, dubbed Northern Fence, nabbed 11 boaters with illegal drugs, including a Michigan man who had 5 grams of cocaine.
The man, who was boating near Put-in-Bay, also had his 26-foot power boat confiscated, said U.S. Coast Guard Master Chief Petty Officer Stephen Betters, operation coordinator. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department is handling the cocaine investigation.
Six boaters were cited for boating under the influence.
The number of offenses is preliminary, because more reports could come in. Boaters were cited around the islands, Sandusky, Port Clinton and Catawba Island.
Customs and immigration officials also participated, but no one was cited for offenses handled by those agencies.
Northern Fence is not a one-shot operation. It will be activated throughout the summer, sometimes for just one day, said Betters, who is based at the Coast Guard station in Marblehead.
During the five-day operation, which ended Monday, agents combed Lake Erie from Huron west to Port Clinton and north to Leamington, Ontario, 40 miles away. Seven canine units, four airplanes, one helicopter and numerous boats were used.
The first meeting to discuss this international operation was held just before Sept. 11, Betters said. The terrorist attacks reinforced the goal - to work together and to share intelligence information, he said.
In all, 39 boats were boarded and 95 stopped and checked but not boarded. "One of the big things we try to do is educate boaters," Betters said.
Most boaters were friendly and cooperative, he said.

I was stopped by the CG this weekend about 10 minutes after blowing a motor...we were limping back to the marina on one motor and the rubber boat decides to stop me for a safety inspection...the current was moving pretty good and pushing me towrds a bouy, so tell them that I only have one engine and just let me get away from this bouy(which is now about 15 feet of my starboard bow)...

well...after I back away from them, they decide to let me go...the guy says "never mind...have a nice day"

Thanks for letting me go guys...
