Safety lanyard

I like to wear my lanyard but I hate the cheezy connection to my wrist. I would like to buy a better quality wristband to connect the lanyard to. Can anyone tell me where to find a good one?

We have these and everyone seems to really like them:

I attach mine around my ankle- it stays out of the way of the steering and throttle controls, and doesnt bother me at all. Little easier to forget its there and walk away with it still on though!

Mine hooks on my self inflating live vest.

We have tried to persuade manufacturers to employ basic human factors engineering (HFE) and install the switch directly under the throttle so the lanyard does not become entangled in the wheel.

By doing this the wrist band becomes the brain link to the lanyard and the operator is naturally reminded to wear it.

I have a carbiner attached to mine. I attach that to my pants or life vest. This way it's not in the way of the wheel or controls.

I ordered this pwc lanyard from Overtons and cut off plastic keys. Didn't like the wrist band (kept getting wrapped around the wheel) so I just use the clip and hook it too a belt loop or drawstring on my swim suit. Works great, matches the boat, and looks 100 times better than the crappy red one that came with it.

Here's what I use. All Jet Ski stuff from Overtons. When I'm wearing my Lifeline I unclip the wrist band and snap it on the D ring.

Fountain4402 05-05-2011 09:28 AM

hook it to jacket, or pants instead

Agree. :drink:

Too Stroked 05-05-2011 10:09 AM

I use a Tigershark (we used to sell them) PWC wrist strap - religiously. To make sure I wear it, when I take it off, I loop it over my shifter. (I have a foot throttle.) That way I can't miss it when I pull away and it even gets in the way if I forget to put it on.

Same here. Easy to clip on and off a vest or belt loop.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking that killing the motors whist one is walking around might not be a bad thing. :evilb:

I like that I have a little slack in mine. If I need to put a line on the side cleat, throw something into the cabin, close the hatch, etc. The wrist lanyards probably won't allow that.

RebarBox 05-05-2011 11:30 AM

not trying to highjack...

my Cafe did not have any lanyards when i bought it. What and where do I buy for a 90' Cafe'??

Thanks.

bajaholic 05-05-2011 12:15 PM

West Marine has them, but it is a pretty common item, on line would likely be a better cost.

I use the lanyard Brad gave me from the Tres Martin Course. Works great.... I still forget I'm wearing it and accidentally kill the engine:lolhit:

It kind of depends on how long the elastic portion is that's attached to the wrist band. The longer it is though, the more tangled up they seem to get. I can make it to the passenger seat, then it's curtains.

Exactly why we encourage wrist bands, They support the brain link to the lanyard. Also reminds you to wear it when it is left over the throttle.

This is exactly what my boat came with new - love it!

antisocial 05-05-2011 04:32 PM

Autotether wireless i saw it at the boat show as alittle expensive but was pretty cool

relaxalot 05-05-2011 06:37 PM

Great responses! Thank you, I like the one from Brad. I will order one right away. I can't believe the "stock" models are so cheap. I always wear mine and I like it on my wrist. In Havasu usually it is so hot that I only have shorts on. It is good to know that so many of you use a safety lanyard. Many boaters do not. Thank you for all of the great suggestions!

I do the same:)

bert4332 05-05-2011 11:00 PM

I wrap mine around my thigh, it's low so never gets in the way, but it only took one time forgetting and stepped too far and slamming everyone forward from the kill. I never notice mine is there anymore. I tried the wrist one, but just got hung up all the time, cords, lines, ropes, or any linear flexible object is my enemy, it will wrap around something just on it's own to mess with me!

Surprised nobody has mentioned an Autotether?

The problem with an auto system is the requirement to verify the remote device is properly attached or worn.

If the key fob or similar is left in a drink holder or attached to another life jacket it will remain on the boat.

While not purely passive the lanyard/wrist/ is vivid and static promoting wear and linking the operator to the actual switch.

True passive systems have been attempted but so far nothing has worked well enough to demonstrate reliability.

Keep it simple is my motto

relaxalot 05-07-2011 03:20 PM

thanks again for the posts and responses. I agree entirely with Brad's logic. I ordered up a blue one to match my boat.

Another possible problem is if the wearer is knocked out and remains in the boat. At least with a lanyard there is the likely chance the wearer will fall away pulling it.

I use a wrist lanyard religiously in all situations.

Like everything else with boats, theres always trade off!

bobsbillets 05-07-2011 07:42 PM

Yes, you can get knocked out and still stay inside the boat! That is a bad idea for fast power boats! Needs to be an attached type to the operator! Don't ask me how I know this! :)

Glad to hear that you will be wearing proper protection.
