Water Preesure HELP!

Ive recenty went from -2 imco to -3 and have experienced high water pressure. When im running say under 80 its fine, around 20-25 psi but once I get over 100 its like 35+. Im worried i might push a head gasket to far. Ive heard of adding dumps but im not sure how. any info is appreciated.

Thanks

Phill

You need pressure relief valves added. I put mine in after the sea pump but before all the coolers.
Eddie Marine sells them:

An OSO member has some new, but old stock relief valves for sale. Contact Rob: [email protected]

Does anybody have a kit for 500 efi's

Sport 280 05-10-2011 04:09 PM

Do not think there is a kit. Just purchase the relief valve, plumb it in the hose coming out of the engine water pump, then run dump line out side or back of boat. I used the relief valves made by merc., a little expensive, but way cheeper than replacing a head gasket.

Make sure that winter layup includes draining the dump line at the relief valve.

My Merc water pressure relief valve is connected inline of the water from the drive to the sea water pump. Is this not the way it should be?

US1 Fountain 05-24-2011 01:06 PM

Mine are right before the circ. pump. Using teh Merc valves. Those things are worth their weight in gold. And priced so too! :)

Anyone have any specific installation procedures for these valves that show where they are supposed to be? I'm wondering if it really matters.......

cabin fever 05-24-2011 04:51 PM

i just ordered the one from Eddie Marine. Save yourself $30 and order it from hardin marine.

cloudmaster_321 05-24-2011 11:20 PM

Where in the system do you plan on installing it? Did Eddie Marine give you any guidance on the location?

JasonSmith 05-25-2011 09:07 AM

I would assume the correct place to install it would be before the sea pump. That hose is stronger and you'll always be supplying the pump with the correct pressure.
That's what makes sense to me anyway. I'm sure there is a opposing theory as well.

Not 100% sure, but I know it will be right before or right after the sea water pump, since that is the easiest area for me to get to, and route the line for the dump.

and no, Eddie marine has not given me anything. I ordered everything online, and didn't talk to anyone though. It doesn't look to be that big of job, and seems pretty staight forward.

Do the Mercruiser valves have replacement springs? Maybe they get weak over time and let the water out a bit earlier than it should......??

SHAWN DAVIS 05-25-2011 12:49 PM

We plumbed right off the strainers, 25 lb pop off valve with a 3/4 discharge hose. This way the entire inlet is not subject to higher pressure with the speed increase

SlowPlay 05-30-2011 10:26 PM

What do you guys think about mounting the discharge port? Shoot them out the back or run them out the sides of the boat?

I ask because my thought is you can see if your blowing pressure if you mount on the side of the boat. There is no way to tell if its coming out of the arse end.

I welded bungs on the back side of the valve in my silent choice divertors. All the water gets dumped right the end of the exhaust. I have water press gauges in the dash that let me know what they are doing.

SlowPlay 05-31-2011 11:56 AM

where did you splice in your gauge?

US1 Fountain 05-31-2011 01:06 PM

They aren't spliced. They are connected directly at the block.

SlowPlay 05-31-2011 03:08 PM

ok wasnt sure if you were taking water pressure at the hose or right off a port on the block. GOTCHA!

Sorry im new to the whole non drive water pickup stuff. Now im wishing i knew this last week! Just drop'd the motors back in.

I have pressure relief valves (I have Bravo Drives with low water pick-ups). The boat was plumbed to dump on the sides, exactly due to the reason you cite, so you can see when the valve is open and it is working. I had a pressure relief valve last summer stop, and I blew a recirculation hose apart, had it replaced the same day (the hose), and blew that apart too. The shame of it all is all I had to do is look back down the side of the hull as I was running, but I became complacent.

I had Bob Wallace at Offshore Performance (here in souht Jersey), replumb and replace both pressure relief valves.

The two outlets that you see one is for the bilge pump, and the other outlet is for the pressure relief valve. Twin engine boat, each side is plumbed identically (understandably).
