Air Horns on a go-fast?
Anyone here on OSO install air horns on their boat ? There are so many jet skiers and guys in boats who are oblivious on L.I. that I feel if I install a REAL LOUD air horn on my Sonic it would make me feel that much safer for me and my family...... I was told to go to this website (http://www.kahlenberg.com/index.html) to by one but my problem is I feel they may look stupid on the boat... Anyone have some clever mounting ideas or possibly a small horn that is as loud as the big ones ? and by the way I am looking for other boats to here me way before the would be able to turn in to me........thanks in advance...................John.

FWIW - As easy as the canned compressed air setup was to install and how little room it took up, I wouldn't bother with a compressor type system. |
That'll be great during a safety check when the water patrol asks if your horn works.

half of the hialeah douchebags in miami have them, they are great for annoying the **** out of everybody at the sandbar. For your purposes doesn't sound like a bad idea but if you see a boat with them here = douchebag!

AFI 10106 Heavy Duty Marine Dual Trumpet Enjoy!!! :drink: |
I would think a jet skier or whomever doesnt hear a Sonic with some nice headers cruising, no air horn would do the trick, but I guess its better to be safe

Fixx
my formula has a set that looks factory,,the mounted them up high rite by the air intake in the bilge..
you havnt seen a air horn until you go to this website. http://www.hornblasters.com/gallery check out some of the videos.. http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...nblasters&aq=f |
In my opinion. a jet skier is not a boater, and every day that I'm on my boat, it seems that I'm right. I don't care how many courses they take, they just don't get it. They do not follow the basic common sense " rules of the road ". I'm 46 years old and I've been boating since I was 8. I know for a fact that I don't know all the rules and regulations, but I have common knowledge, and it seems that jetskiers don't have that common knowledge. I'm not talking about boaters that also have a jetski, I'm talking about people that have never boated in their life and go out and buy a jetski. To sum it up, I'm not moving out of the way for a jetski if I'm in the right of way. I hope it doesn't scratch my gelcoat.

I avoid jet skis like the plague! Every year I will get one or two that are just kamikaze. They just don't understand distance is a margin of safety. I have two compact horns in my bilge that need replacing. Was looking at electric trumpet horns. Do you think with horns being in the bilge and the horns not being marked ussg ignition proof it would be a violation during an inspection?

I've got a train horn in the engine compartment run off 1 compressor. Previous owner installed them and are loud as he//. The engine light switch on the dash controls the compressor pump (engine light was not very good so made better use of the switch) and the horn was hooked up to the original horn switch on the dash.

If you can find an air compressor originally used with bypass type exhaust systems, those were marine and non-sparking. Alternatively, you could use air horns supplied with compressed air from a tank. I used a small fire extinguisher bottle and air horns on my motorcycle. I could even stop people at RR crossings (but I was young back then)! Just a short cable and a lever to push the valve and WAAAHHH! Most effective. |
Dock Holiday had mounted a set on either side of his 36' Baja inside the gunwale vents. He posted some pics here, and was very happy with the results.

GL cool vid!!!.
Now imagine there is a 70' Blue water to your starboard as you pass them to their port. A kid on jet ski launches bluewater wake and lands virtually right in your path. Jet skis think they are the only person out there and I don't care how loud you are they will run right in front of you (last year we had one run into the side of a well known skater, and guess who gets the blame). Last weekend for the Spring Harbor Hop we were running upstream @ Loto with a 46' rough rider with 1350's to the right, a Cig Gladiator in the center and a 43' black thunder with trips on the left. A 50' sedan bridge is in front of all of us and low and behold here comes a jet ski flying through the air right in the path of all three boats (the black thunder nearly had to come off of plane). You would think the pwc would here or see us coming but that was not the case.. These idiots don't get it. My wife gets so freaked out on the weekends that she holds one of those big hand held air horns while we are running. |

Hey John,
You can always do what I do. Be at the dock at 8 am when they open the hangar. Go straight to the ocean, beat the crap out of yourself and your passengers. Be back at the dock by 12:00 washing down. :drink: Seriously, I think you are making a good decision here. And seriously, thats what I do every time I run my boat. I absolutely hate the bays around here on the weekends. Especially, after 12:00 on a hot summer weeken afternoon. Aroud here, you would never know that gas is expensive and the country is in an economical mess. Vinny |
I hear ya Johnny. I remember last year I was heading down to Reynolds from Oceanside near K&K. A jet skier's doing figure 8's in the middle of the buoys. I slow down to 25-30mph to pass him while going wide and the guy ends up 5 feet from me almost hitting me!! I gunned it to the bay constable who's sitting in the middle of Reynolds and explain to him what happened. The bay constable ends up going to Oceanside only to find them doing more figure 8's in a 5mph zone. I ended up docking at my place, smoking a cigar and having a beer while i watched them impound the jetski!!!

For years Ive had a small hand held air horn mounted with velcro tape next to the helm....I can grab it very quickly and everybody on the lake hears it including the jet skiers....its VERY effective.
an old pic but you can see it on the extreme right about halfway up. |
Just a bit of warning....when i raced ATV's I made rigged one of the hand held airhorns up to a lever on the handlebars so I could let the slower lapped guys know I was comming by in a hurry... it backfired in a way...
People do not expect to hear a horn while they are on a jetski or quad for that matter... they hear it, freak, panic and do all sorts of stupid things without thinking. Hell, I used to drive firetrucks and ambulances, loud sirens, lots of bright blinky lights, big and all had loud airhorns. You would believe the stupid stuff people did in front of me. |
