Need to get a NJ boat to Maryland.

I really want a boat that’s sitting in New Jersey (exit 8 ;-) ). The issue is the trailer needs work and it’s not like I can go up there after work a few week nights and fix it before bringing it home. I would go get the boat with my trailer but the trailer it’s sitting on is original and pretty custom to the boat. If it was sitting in my yard and after making a couple buys online I could have it fixed in a weekend. So I really want it to.
The problem is how do I get it home? Thought about renting a car trailer and loading the whole thing up (it’s only a 19’ boat) but I don’t think they are wide enough for the boat trailer. Also thought about renting, like those car wheel dollies that the old tow trucks used to carry but I can only find one place that sells them and at 1500 bucks it blows this deal out of the water (boat almost has to be a donation to make it worth fixing).
Any ideas?

In SE Texas we're kind of Bubba's.
I'd fish up a few used mattresses and use a car hauling trailer.
Place one on one side and two on the other,
Lean it off the keel with the heavy side towards the two mattress's there, and cinch it to the trailer with some two or three inch nylon strap with ratchets.
It'll work like a charm!!!

See ya,
Kelly

What needs to be done to the trailer to get it to Maryland?

Guy says it's been sitting in the same spot for 10+ years. Flat tires, unsure bearings and springs, needs lights. Then it has to go 180 miles.

Duck Diggler 05-15-2011 09:01 AM

Take some spare tires and bearings and roll with it, I live right about 2 miles from the de bridge. I'm about 1/2 way. Your more than welcome to leave it here if you have any problems on your way.

Like Duck said, If you can find the right size bearings and tires bring a few spares with you. Gather up the tools and supplies you need and have a bearing packing party in the guys driveway. (if he is cool with it).
You can rig up a light bar that plugs into your truck with a long set of wires, So all you have to do is hang it on the back of the boat with some bungee cords. That would solve your light problem.

Why thanks Duck but the last thing I want is something to happen on the NJ turnpike with a not so legal trailer. I would do a trip to fix it but the guy who has it is hurt and can tell me nothing about what would be needed.

Baja555 05-15-2011 09:42 AM

dont take the turnpike.. there are plenty of other ways down... pack the bearings, bring a light kit and some rachet straps.. make it as good as possible and take your time. sounds like you have some people willing to give you help along the way.

“sounds like you have some people willing to give you help along the way”

How cool is that!

My biggest fear is have a broken trailer in (to me) no where land. I may have to put a list together from point a to point b with everyone’s address and phone numbers.

Hey Hauling, who is Rob?

Philm 05-15-2011 06:25 PM

I am about 10 miles into DE from the bridge, the exit right before the MD line on 95, so if you need help let me know.

I wont be home for another two weeks, so it will have to wait until then if you need help, but if you really need to drop it somewhere on the way, my driveway is available even if Im not there.

HiPerf2000 05-15-2011 09:08 PM

if you could borrow a bigger bunk trailer, forklift the other boat + trailer on the bunk trailer and bring it home. lay some 2x12's across the bunks so the badd trailer has a flat surface to sit on. i moved a boat lift like this.

Take a picture, or describe the boat and trailer to the best of your ability, put an ad on Uship.com, and see if any of the bids are reasonable.

It's a 19' boat. Trailer will add a couple feet to that but just the tung. Single engine. I live in Pasadena.
This is a twin to the one I'm trying to buy.

I am a boat Hauler i can help you out...message me if your interested

bigblue 05-19-2011 08:18 PM

seems small enough to put on a small equipment trailer. Ive moved a few things on a 20' deck that were longer than it. Your trailer can hang over the tongue and fit fine. I moved an old suburban on one! lifted! That would probably sit higher than the boat would.

Good Luck!

fireboatpilot 05-19-2011 09:31 PM

A 19' boat on the trailer will fit on most flat bed tow trucks. Have the driver winch it up from the stern first and let the trailer tounge hang over the rear of the flat bed. Height won't be an issue with such a small boat and the trailer wheels will fit between the bed rails. I've done it several times, not a problem really. Sometimes we tend to over think the problem.

f_inscreenname 05-19-2011 10:15 PM

That would be a 200 mile flatbed tow. Looking for cheaper options. The guy is a little high on what he wants for the boat anyway so.......

fireboatpilot 05-20-2011 09:17 AM

Most all towing of any sort is done by the mile anyway so try to work out a flat rate with someone local near you. Maybe your auto mech has a tow service that will cut you a deal. Trucks aren't making $ sitting still.

Panther, Did you consider running the boat via water and then driving just the trailer to MD ?

Would be a fun trip, probably more expensive in fuel costs than just hiring a hauler though?:grinser010::drink:

At least two tanks of fuel (250 gal X 4.30 gal X 2 for 93) to make the trip. I'd rather trailer it. would need to go down the coast, across deleware bay and thru the C&D.

It would be a great trip if I had the time and money to blow but I'm buying a house right now so keeping things on the down-low. :drink:

Nice meeting you today. That's a beautiful boat you have.:drink:

If the boat has been sitting for 10 years, the buzzards circled a long time ago.
