Most of the lake is blurred out on google earth. Oh, get a sea strainer if you don't have one!

The best instrument for gauging shallow water is
the brain.

I have a pair of Garmin 5212's in my boat and the charts are pretty accurate for the most part and seem to err on the side of caution when it comes to shallow water. You can set the depth you want to stay out of and you can have the chart show "danger" areas in red. They make maps specific for most bodies of water. I agree that local knowledge is important but if you stay on the deep areas on a recently purchased chart you will stay out of trouble, if you want to explore an area your not sure about do it at idle speed with a sounder.

Here is a very cool chart that you can blow way up and learn the lake. http://www.marinecruiser.com/chart.html
