Lake Powell???

With all the crazy weather, is Lake Powell filling up? I want to make it there someday, but always read about it drying up...Is it getting water back in it?

LakeRacer 05-23-2011 07:19 AM

Check this site out.

in answer to your question, yes it is filling up. As bad as it has been these past few years...Lake Powell is actually doing what it was designed for. Keeping the southwest alive.

The snowpack is at near 190% in the mountians here. If the weather breaks and gets hot our run off will be interesting. And that runs right into Powell. It has been unseasonably cool and wet lately, which has slowed the run off.

Powell would be full this year. They will be releasing 13 million arce ft of water into Mead instead the required 9 million. Lake Mead is 130 ft below full pool. In the newspaper it showed it will be going up 30+ ft this year.

GeeterB 05-23-2011 01:59 PM

Thanks for the info...seems like if i get there in the next couple of years it'll still be there:drink:
I want to take my boat from st louis to powell and spend a week.

relaxalot 05-23-2011 02:56 PM

powell has over 2000 miles of shoreline. It has plenty of water to float your boat!

I hope so because in two weeks this puppy is going to a new home there.

fitler 05-24-2011 08:36 AM

This is going to be a great year for going to powell. i haven't seen it full in a long time. It is nice because when it is full there is better access to alot of things you wouldn't see with a lower water level. Bad part is that all the crap and trash that people have left on the shore will be washed in to the lake.

What's the current status of Lake Powell? Good year to drag a boat there? The graph doesn't look promising.

I'm sure it will be great. We are going for the first time this year with some friends, renting two 75' houseboats as well as bringing our boat. Should be a blast. We are going early August.

There is still plenty of water in Lake Powell. Our snowpack is light right now, but we get the bulk of our snow in March and April. Like was posted above, the lake has over 2000 miles of shoreline.

Definitely worth the trip.

I was out there a couple of years ago. It was at 3660. I towed out there from St. Louis. Awesome scenery. Be prepared for cold water compared to water in the midwest. We started in Powell, then Mead, and then Havasu. We were gone for 4 weeks. Awesome trip. My wife took this video in Mountain Sheep Canyon Slot.

Cool video...man is it narrow thru there !!!!

Its a must do trip I was out there in 06 allot of those areas I call them cracks you would see 175 + in depth , it quite intimidating .

RIPJIVE9311 01-30-2013 12:47 PM

I have been boating Mead for 35 years and always laugh when someone says"I quit going due to the lake drying up".I have seen it from overflowing the spillways to it's lowest levels and have not missed a summer in all these years. These lakes are hundreds of feet deep and if they are down 100 feet I have still been able to float my boats, yes it does limit where you can go but I have boated every summer for 35 years no mater what the levels were. The only problem with Powel when it is down is you cannot go as far into the fingers that run out of it but it is still an incredible lake. Make the trip you will enjoy it.

Depth didn't seem to be an issue until the very back of most slots. We went through a spot so narrow i turn off the engine and I was on one side and the wife on the other. We had about 4 inches clearance on either side, in 80' of water, and we pulled the boat through about a 100' section. We got lucky there was enough room to turn around at the end.

ICDEDPPL 02-01-2013 08:14 AM

I would love to spend a week out there sleeping in the boat, is that feasible? the 20+ hour tow is a bit overwhelming thou ..I hate long rides

XtremePowerboats.com 02-01-2013 08:35 AM

To date ,Lake Powell was our Best & Most adventurous trip yet ! We spent a week on a 75' Houseboat with two families ,,jet skis, A ski boat and alot of Food ! Dont forget anything because if you do ,You will NOT be able to get it for awhile .We had to take our jet skis for miles to get more marshmallows & Popcorn when we ran out ...
Great relaxing or Adventurous vacation !! A Fast boat is a Must next time .Should have taken the MTI then ..

jayboat 02-01-2013 09:01 AM

Definitely on my radar. Been wanting to see it for a long time and plan to add it as part of a trip to Havasu or LOTO, likely this year.

Keytime 02-01-2013 12:16 PM

Sounds like Lake Powell is begging for a run of some kind.

Uncle Dave 02-01-2013 12:39 PM

Lake Powell is a phenomenal experience.

A week on that lake barely scratches the edges of what is there.

It certainly is a place that should be on every boater's bucket list. We haven't picked a date yet but we're definitely going this year since it's "only" about a 600 mile tow.

The last time I went was with my dad in about 1978 so I'm due. :drool1:

Knot 4 Me 02-01-2013 01:42 PM

I've been on Mead but not Powell. Looks/sounds like I need to get that on the list.

never enuff 02-01-2013 01:43 PM

Lake Powell is one of the most beautiful lakes you will ever see. We used to go every other year until the prices of the houseboats almost doubled. It is a lot more fun if you bring other water toys(jet skies or another boat) and just use the house boat for "home base". I agree about making sure you have everything you need, if you run out, you either have to go back to shore or use one of the marina's on the water. With about 2k miles of shore line there is always something to see or do.
