Fixing a wet transom
 

Hi guys -
I am posting for a friend, he has a 1995 25 ft Powerquest and his transon is wet. He thinks the water was coming from one of the exhaust tip holes. He was replacing one of his trim tab lines and felt the wet wood. I have (thank goodness) never been in this position befor and don't know if it's as easy as letting the wood dry out and resealing the leak spot or if you have to replace the transom. Thanks in advance.

Depends on how bad it is. He might want to have an experienced glass guy take a look.

No matter what, it's likely to involve pulling the engine and stripping most of the engine compartment. In very rare cases where the affected area isn't too big, it can be dried out over time with vacuum and low heat and then saturated with epoxy or Git-Rot, as long as it's not in a load-bearing area. If it's around the gimbal, just assume that you're in for a huge job.
