Tapping into a hot lead

When installing electronics, what is the best method to tap into a hot lead. I read some where on here that you can cause pretty good damage by connecting to the wrong hot.

thanx

Depends on what you are hooking up & what kind of power it requires. Most gauges and small electronics can be hooked to the fuse block (best place) things that require more amps should be connected at the battery or battery switch.

Fuse Block? Is that a terminal block?

Yes "But" you will have terminal blocks for - (neg) also (it will usually have a majority of black wires) the one you want will have fuses in it and most of the wires will be red or purple.

Kinda. A fuse block is a terminal block, but with fuses for separate circuts.
A ground terminal block is a strip of brass with multiple screws for attaching several ground leads.

I'm assuming the fuse block is located under/behind the dash?

What are you connecting????

Baja_342 05-25-2011 06:59 AM

1 Attachment(s)
I tap into a blank ACC switch with a piggy back connector for something like adding a portable satellite radio.

Led lights, separate switch

I would probably tap into the power wire going to your other accessory lights then.

see where everything else is wired to pos and neg and run a new circuit the same as the others, if you only boat in fresh water tapping into a wire may not be a problem but if you go in the salt its a bad idea.
