NY to atlantic city... How far?

between 30 and 40 mph cruising speed with cruisers following... how long you guys think it is for those who have done this travel?

thanks!

Tom A. 06-19-2011 09:59 PM

From Liberty State Park to A/C it is roughly 100 miles for reference. I have not made the trip myself, however.

Mastercraft240 06-20-2011 08:48 AM

I've been told around 2-2.5 hours starting from long beach.

VetteLT193 06-20-2011 10:50 AM

I did this trip maybe 15 years ago (and continued onward to FL). The ocean can get rough out there. We caught air in a 45 Viking sportfish and broke the weld on the pickup tube to the fuel tank on one engine. I didn't think it was possible to catch air running 20-ish knots in a 40,000 pound boat but those seas proved that wrong.

If I want to take a look at a boat at comstock yacht sales in brick, can I come inland at manasquan inlet and run in the small river to brick? Also Have a stop at lanoka harbor marina, how far in boat is it from brick?

SHARKEY-IMAGES 07-24-2011 10:48 PM

It depends on where in Brick. Brick has waterfront on the Manasquan as well as the Meteconk, Beaver Dam Creek, Kettle Creek, Silver Bay and the northern Barnegat Bay.

You have approx. 1.5 miles from the inlet to the Pt Pleasant Canal. The Canal is another mile long no wake zone. If your are going to the end of the Metedeconk add another 5 miles.

Yes, you can run inside as much as you want once you get to the Manasquan Inlet. Be prepared to navigate the waters once you get passed Barnegat inlet on the Intracoastal though...

jeff32 07-24-2011 11:13 PM

comestock yacht sales on princeton ave, brick.

when you say: be prepared to navigate the water,do you mean I should stay inland at or after barnegat? or I have to go offshore ?

scarabman 07-25-2011 05:00 AM

He means the intercoastal gets tricky in some places south of the Barnegat inlet. It can be a nice ride but in a few spots you HAVE to pay attention.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 07-25-2011 06:12 AM

Also stay offshore about 2 miles as you get towards Holgate inlet. Many shoals there on the outside. I you you are near them, you will see the waves breaking over 1 mile out...

jeff32 07-25-2011 11:00 PM

what should I be watching for, to avoid crab trap or fish trap? someone just warned me about that... they know many people who caught those underway... they are blind? or just did not noticed some sign? buoy? whatever else?

Expensive Date 07-25-2011 11:09 PM

You are pretty safe north of the Rt 72 bridge, take the intercostal below it there are two short no wake zones. After Long beach island going through great bay is ok but then you get into a narrow winding channel. You really need to pay attention at low tide stay between the markers and watch your GPS.At low tide you can be in the channel and see crab pots outside of the channel above water:eek:.If you are careful you will be fine,Those who boat in Barnegat bay have a saying "if you break down its ok because you can walk home"

If you are running down on the weekend and I have some notice I will run with you and you can follow me.

That's pretty funny Tim, never heard that one before!

Jeff, I'd give yourself 3 -4 hours from Liberty to AC if you're taking the intercoastal. Figure 100+ miles at 45 mph with no wake zones, maybe a train bridge, the canal etc.

The outside all the way down would be much shorter if you're up to it. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get from Sandy Hook to Barnegat Inlet and less than an hour to get to AC inlet from my recollection.

I've never made the trip all the way from Sandy Hook to AC but have done the trip from Sandy Hook to Barnegat Inlet countless times and also did Sandy Hook to Beach Haven, NJ but did Brick NJ to AC on the poker run.

Have fun, sounds like a nice trip!

Frank

If you leave early, you might have a nice ride and get there in 2-3 hours. If the afternoon SE winds kick up, even Barneget Bay gets ugly and it will be a long ride inside. I would plan to arrive before noon.

jeff32 07-27-2011 06:27 AM

thanks guys for your help offer !!! I'll sure let you know!

J.B. Marshall 07-27-2011 06:32 AM

I ran down to Barneget last weekend on the outside and from the Varazano Bridge it's 65 miles to the inlet, it took me 1 1/2 hrs both times (up & back) running at 47 MPH.
I think AC is about 20 miles south of barneget. If you plan to run the outside you will need to go early before the winds kick up.

Enjoy
JB

This is true, but really only between the TR bridge and Barnegat Inlet. South of that most of the intercoastal is broken off of open water by sedge islands until a short open water run thru great Bay and then into protected waters again.

HabanaJoe 07-27-2011 08:06 AM

I've made that trip many times, back in the SH days it was 2 or 3 times a week from Sandy Hook to AC (always on the outside). If you want to kill a day go inside, if not go outside and like others have said do it early, the afternoon wind can slap you in face going south sometimes.

Also, as others have said you can hug the coast until you get to the southern inlets, then you need to be a mile or two out but then you can cut back in if you want to. You'll see the water breaking, during the day I tend cut inside between the bars and shore but unless you know the area, stay offshore, your GPS shows the shoals, beleive what it tells you the water does turn to land out in the ocean!

I enjoy the ocean swell rather then endure no wake zones and everything else you encountered on the inside.

Lobster pots are marked with a stick on a bouy, there might be just some small bouyed pots but at speed even if you hit one the chances of fouling the prop are slim the boat thens to push them to the side and you go over. Lord knows at night we've hit plenty at 15 knots and never snagged a pot. There is always current so the lines on the pots go fairly staright down no need to stay more than a few feet away.

jeff32 07-27-2011 11:09 PM

leaving friday! it's coming!

Comanche3Six 07-27-2011 11:37 PM

Wow! That's a nice long ride! I did it in late eighties in my Cigarette Firefox when took I it to work one Friday. I was working construction on the restoration of Ellis Island. Long story short, the crane broke early & I left around 9 am. A beautiful sunny day, light breeze, and 2/3' seas the whole way down. Made one pit stop for food/fuel & took off for AC! I'm guessing 3 1/2 hours total. Enjoy the ride!

SHARKEY-IMAGES 07-27-2011 11:45 PM

Cape May to Manasquan Inlet took me 2.25 hours in this:

I am sure you can average a bit better speed than that... :evilb:

Have a great trip !

jeff32 07-28-2011 06:17 AM

showed up at liberty landing marina yesterday, after 2 strong rain storm...spent the day walking in NY. Planning on leaving to A/C tomorrow. Waves and wind forecast on the ocean seems ok... I'm I wrong?

Any marina in AC that are just across the street for the beach? and hotels real close? or ocean city?
or just before A/C ?

Thanks!

SHARKEY-IMAGES 07-31-2011 09:02 PM

Stay at the Golden Nugget formerly known as Trumps Marina.

Take the Jittney transportation over to the beach.

jeff32 07-31-2011 10:13 PM

beach heaven for the moment... only saw a top gun today on the ocean, going north... smooth and calm like ... real calm !

tricky just enough to get into little egg harbour... but saw dolphins!

JB, you doing the Fun Run on the 20th? We're going to launch in Stony Point and run down with everyone but we intend on staying the night in the city. Right now we're looking at Lincoln Harbor Marina.........any thoughts on staying there, or do you have another suggestion?

J.B. Marshall 08-09-2011 04:47 PM

I'm looking to do the run, I hear it may go out to Port Washington, that's also good by me. Not sure I will do the overnight thing. Lincoln Harbor Marina would be a good spot, good restaurants & bars or ferry over to NYC.

Going to Port Washington seems to be the talk lately. Looks like its a good run. Where's the best place down that way to get gas, 89-octane? I think we have decided for sure on Lincoln Harbor, hope to see you and meet you at the run (we have a 35 Sonic).

One other question for you, a buddy of mine wants to bring his 24'-25' Crownline but is worried it may get too rough for him, would he be alright with his boat?

J.B. Marshall 08-10-2011 08:43 AM

It can get very rough in the NY harbor from all the ferry and boat traffic. Outside of that as long as the winds are calm he should be ok on the rest of the trip.
