Key West

I know its early, but where is the best place to stay if you plan on flying there. Thanks Jeff

JasonSmith 06-22-2011 10:46 AM

The airport is on the other side of the island form the action of Duval.

bobo 06-22-2011 10:53 AM

yea a whole 7 minute cab ride :drink:. stay in old town , so you can walk any where you want .ovi ,s are gettin big here. that means bikes scateboards etc.

Stay at the SHIPYARDS perfect . 30 seconds from the race site front gate .

unless youre wealthy

Do you want quiet or wild?

Quiet, Westin Sunset Key the island in the harbor

Close to Mallory Square and races Ocean Key Resort, Westin Key West Resort, Hyatt Key West Resort

waterboy222 06-22-2011 11:12 AM

What are the dates?

lucky strike 06-22-2011 11:12 AM

We always stay at the Westin, great view of the races.

wstultz 06-22-2011 11:15 AM

The Westin s great and if you book a suite there for the races they may upgrade you to Sunset Key when you get there. That is what happened to us last year and Sunset Key was one fine establishment. We had a blast, plus, their private dock on the island is no more than 100' from the race course. it was well worth it.

I always stay at the Galleon. Easy access to Duval and the Poker Run docks. Most rooms are two bed, two bath with full kitchen, washer/dryer...it makes sense for me to have those amenities since I usually spend 1 1/2 to 2 weeks down there. 1 week to party, 1 week to recover!! :drink:

For couples I highly recommend the Duval House. It is on the 800 block of Duval Street, only a couple blocks from all the action but quiet once you are there. It is made up of 6 or 7 houses / buildings that surround a courtyard and it has a pool. You feel like you are staying at a small resort and we basically had the pool to ourselves. No kids under 16.

Wayniac 06-22-2011 12:49 PM

We like the Crown Plaza La Concha on Duval.

wrinkleface 06-22-2011 12:58 PM

Jazz, Connie & I stayed at the Marquesa last Nov! 3 or so blocks from the stuff! Was a real nice place!!! good luck!

Quinlan 06-22-2011 01:49 PM

We just booked the Galleon. and have to move Sat to Dock side.
Everything is filling up quick this year. Close to Duvall anyway. Better hurry

JasonSmith 06-22-2011 05:19 PM

El Rancho!

Jassman 06-22-2011 07:03 PM

thanks ya'll for the great responses..we had our 26th anniversary in may and been busy, and just getting around to setting something up with a bunch of friends to have a good time. It was either New Orleans or KW..Since we live only an hour away from NO, KW was the logical choice. :drink: Jeff

Off topic a little, but what is the drive from MIA like?
Thinking bout takin a road trip down from airport this year.
More specific the drive back on Monday. Traffic? options for flights are 4pm and 6pm.

Do the 6pm flight for sure, give your self 4hrs to get back on monday, most of the times I have been it only takes 3 but you never know. Unless you really feel like a scenic drive, (which is nice), I would just fly into Keywest, you may want to drink on monday, or worse, you may be hung over, and when you add that drive and then a flight back home, you will be one whipped puppy for work on tuesday. If the drive itself is a highight to your trip, then it can be worth it, but factor it all in, Key West is a great time.

JasonSmith 06-23-2011 11:23 AM

If you can find a flight into Lauderdale you're better off. Less congestion and chances are you'll have a better experience than at MIA.
The Greyhound of the skies (Southwest) flies there so tickets are more reasonable if you've got bags.

Big Time 06-23-2011 11:28 AM

If you make the drive, gotta make the drive down fun...lots of places to stop. We try to do a couple of different stops along the way. Last year we stopped at Alabama Jacks for lunch and stopped for a few beers and pizza to go at No Name Pub. I always enjoy the ride down...the ride back? Not so much. Never left on that following Monday, always leave at least 2-3 days to recover by the pool before I make the trip back home! :drink:

Found we can One Way the rental so may just fly back from KW.
Unless the Ciggy goes!
Then I will need a chase driver with the Truck and trailer.

Or you could just fly in & out in the Bonanza with us and leave the driving to someone else. It's so uncivilized.:drink:

waterboy222 06-23-2011 03:04 PM

We are staying at the Galleon too..

It can be REALLY bad if you come thru the Keys when school buses are picking up or dropping off, otherwise it's a 3 1/2 hour drive

Nope & no desire to do so. Nothing about being on a boat with no place to sit and no shade for 6 ours appeals to me. Not to mention the smell from the head.
