Propeller Cover to protect swimmers

Can anyone recommend a good prop cover for my SSM's to protect swimmers? I've seen the Merc ones, but maybe there's something better out there. My kids like to swim off the tunnel tab and it's just a matter of time til I will need to get out the suture kit. Thanks, Eric

Hering just came out with some to help with this issue.

This what I plan on using on my bravo1 Labbed props. Don't think it will fit a #6 prop. But there other styles on ebay.

Put something similar on the steering wheel as a reminder so you don't forget.

It's dangerous back there. I used to take a minute or two and show everyone the outdrive, the prop, the skeg, the ventilation plate etc. before they jumped in if they weren't familiar with the back end of a boat. I'd tell them how to approach the stern and make their way to the ladder after a swim. It was very deliberate and they got the message.

Although it seems a bit "lecturish", I did it after some girl I had out on one of my old boats jumped in without any detailed knowledge of the equipment back there, she got cut bad and still has the scars today.

After my 2 minute lectures started my passengers never came close to an accident, and that's going back 15 years.

I do the same thing and have never had an incident. I make sure to warn others swimming nearby the same way before they get too close.

Thanks for the replies. I was worried about forgetting them being on as well. Tieing something to the steering wheel is a great idea.

my friend had little boueys tied to his as a reminder.

We have three kids so I made a set of covers that have a plastic liner in case some one falls or kicks the prop it wouldn't go through the fabric and still cut them. They have a draw string around the top to collapse around the prop.

I have a matching bag that goes over the throttles to remind me they are on.

We have had two incidents in the last 5 years. I tried to moon someone and fell off hitting my side and slicing myself to the bone. And another buddy who ended up with about 20 stiches including several internal.

I'm just waiting for someone to hit one of my props while swimming and it bothers me. I'm running 16.5X 36 Merc 5 blades on NXT drives. Will any of these covers fit my props??
Thanks much.

Strip Poker 388 06-25-2011 03:38 PM

SkiDoc 06-25-2011 10:21 PM

Twin-Kyle 06-25-2011 10:59 PM

SkiDoc 06-26-2011 05:03 AM

I've given bblades the last dime
I'm going to.

dcb29 06-27-2011 07:43 AM

Is the Herring cover paded like some of those shown in this thread? Thats really what i'm looking for. Those points on the blades are really sharp.

nitrousnolan 06-27-2011 08:04 AM

I've seen people in our area just take a "swimming noodle" and put a slice down the center, then wrap around the prop using the the ear points to hold it on and cut the extra length off? I haven't had any experience with this but have seen it a few times and seems to be a cheap way out and easy to do is you need something quick.

dcb29 06-27-2011 04:32 PM

Great idea.Thanks
