I got the call late last night. Apparently, three of the racers donated their prize money to the Doug Lewis Charity and the OPA matched their donation.
A total of $3,000 was raised.

Wanna give a big thanks to Jeff, Dave and Mike for the use of thier 42 Fountain as as pace boat. What an awsome boat!!
Felt bad for the racers who broke, that sucks.
Was a nice race , awsome conditions! A great crowd turn out too!!
If thats true with Firewater, who ever did that is a huge Scumbag!
Nothing like good sportsmanship, also goes to show a lack of confidence on the person that does stuff like that.

I fueled up at Drum Pt Marina where they were donating their Tips and 10 cents per gallon this weekend. I am glad to see how many people are willing to help out!

Hello Race Fans,
Under perfect skies and a light Northwest winds, the New Jersey shore saw it ’s first race of the 2002 racing season, SBI/OPA style. Brick NJ was the host town for this OPA/SBI Divisional race. Brick really rolls out the red carpet for the racers and the Mayor and town Council couldn’t have been more accommodating. They allow us to use Windward Beach to serve as the Dry Pits area and Wherland Brothers Marina (next door) served as the wet Pits, both located directly on the Metedeconk River. Mayor Scarpelli sincerely enjoys offshore racing and views it as good wholesome family entertainment that he is proud to endorse to his community. He absolutely considers himself to be a member of the Bandit Racing Team. In fact at last year’s race he drove Bandit at race speed in the river.
The boats left the pits under escort from the State Police and enjoyed a quick ride up the Metedeconk River. Many of you know, the Metedeconk River is separated from the ocean by a two and a half mile no wake zone known as the Point Pleasant Canal. It must have been quite a site from the neighboring houses along the canal to see a State Police boat with flashing lights leading a pack of noisy race boats on plane through the canal. Yes, we ran at 40mph on plane through the entire canal. From there we took a
quick ride up to the Wharfside Restaurant where we had a 20 minute hold over until we had a secure course for a 1pm start.
At 12:50 under a Coast Guard escort the boats broke the inlet to find a relatively calm conditions with waves of about 2 to 3 feet with a with a snotty foot tall wind blown chop on top. Actually these were very fast conditions for most of the boats. After a parade lap the boats broke into two mills and awaited the starts.
Out of the gate in F1, Typhoon was showing everyone the short way around the course as they drove in typical drive it like ya stole it fashion. Team Typhoon had it won until a wet ignition box brought them off plane for good. Team Gecko went on to take the win.
In F2, the brand new canopied staggered engine Cigarette Gladiator from Lynch Mob racing wasn’t allowed to race due to a faulty valve in their on board SCUBA system. So that left Outlaw to run alone and take the win.
P5 had Simply Awesome, Extreme Air and Club Egan Racing take the start and after the gremlins took Simply Awesome and Extreme Air out the race, Club Egan went on to finish and take the checkered flag.
P4 Saw Delicate Sound of Thunder, a 38 Scarab in it’s first race, Panther, a 30’ Scarab Panther and Bronx Bandit, a full blown canopied race boat take the start together. This bracket allowed for great racing until a blown engine stopped the Sound of Thunder and a lost prop shaft put Panther on one motor to let Bronx Bandit take the win.
P3 Had Wassup sporting a new purple and yellow paint job gainst the original Dry Martini boat and the incomparable Peter Meyer and John Gregorio in the old tried and true open cockpit Instigator. Instantly Instigator pulled a huge lead while Wassup and Dry Martini had a flying good time. Instigator looked like it would run away with the win until something let go and he went home on one motor. Wassup said, “See ya” to Dry Martini and
never looked back.
P2 Was fielded by the old open cockpit Firewater boat matched up against Relentless a new team with a 32 Skater that has a long history of winning on the offshore circuit. Firewater didn’t make the start so Relentless got a chance to feel the boat out for the first time under racing conditions. He even got to practice taking the checkered flag off the back of the Start finish boat.
P1 Saw Bandit, a 43 CUV run unchallenged to take the win. Too bad no one else showed because Bandit ran really well all day to take the overall win.
Overall it was a great day, the seawall along the inlet was packed with people and the spectator fleet was easily over 100 boats while the beaches were lined with people. It was a day when everyone enjoyed a beautiful day in the sun at the Jersey Shore. We are always happy to see all the racers have a safe and competitive race with a very high fun factor for everyone
concerned.
After everyone was back on the trailer and had a chance to swap a few stories about the day, Mayor Scappelli called everyone to order one last time for the awards ceremony at Windward Beach. In his remarks, the Mayor promised that he would personally work at bringing in a major sponsor for next years race in order to help increase the prize purse.
During the awards we were reminded of our fellow Jersey racer Doug Lewis, who is going through the battle of his life. He has a disease that will require him to move from our area to receive a bone marrow transplant on the west coast. You can see the full story at http://www.usapowerboating.com/doug-lewis.html. Peter Meyer was the first to donate his winnings plus an additional $500 to the Doug Lewis fund. Kevin Erim of Outlaw Racing and Team Firewater followed suit with the cash donations in addition to their winnings. Additionally all the racers donated
their winnings to the Doug Lewis fund and finally OPA pledged that it would match all donation from the racers that had donated their winnings. Doug is a member of our local community and a friend to most of the people in the racing circles. This was an unexpected heartwarming chain of events that had the racers pull together to help a friend in need and we are all praying for
Doug to recover as quickly as possible.

Look under the Powerboat heading for great photos from last years race. Ike is a Photographer for Sports Illustrated so keep your eye on future issues for possible photo coverage.
Our next race will be held on Sunday, June 23rd. In this next race the boats will start in Point Pleasant Beach and then run to Seaside where they will run laps around the racecourse that will run from the MTV stage to the southern Funtown pier. The finish will be near Casino pier. The last race of our season will be held on Friday August 16th. This will be an SBI/OPA National race televised by OLN – Outdoor Life Network.

Body Shot 1 - Thank you VERY much for your help as it was greatly appreciated. We scrambled and did our best to run, but we just had one of those days where everything seemed to go against us. We still had a great trip and enjoyed being there. Besides, there will always be another race day. We are looking to run in Marathon next and then in Seaside Heights for the regional. We ran the boat all day yesterday here at home and then packed it up for its trip back to Miami. It goes in the paint booth at the end of the week so it should look great the next time you see it! Thanks again to all for their help and we look forward to seeing you next time!

Glad you folks enjoyed the commentary. I think it's more enjoyable than just reading a results page that shows lap speeds.
You've got to admit that we put on a very racer friendly event where everyone has a good time in a no pressure environment.
We look forward to having everyone back for the first ever Seaside Ocean race in three weeks. It should be a hoot.
Randy, I still think you owe me a car wash. Bring your sponge next time.
