First Sterling 1700 Delivered to Skater—Exclusive Engine Photos

As you can see from the "Related Stories" at the bottom of this article, speedonthewater.com has been following this story since its inception, http://speedonthewater.com/new-boats...ne-photos.html.

Looks like Sterling is in the home stretch of this project.

What drives, IIRC 1500ftlbs is too much torque for the Merc 6.

jmeng 06-30-2011 05:20 PM

Boat had 6's last time I saw it.

That's a great question and one I'll ask Peter Hledin tomorrow.

My guess, however, at least in terms of off-the-shelf rating, is Arneson.

7000 rpms that's spinning pretty fast :)

mrb30 06-30-2011 07:56 PM

Great power from a great engine builder, but wow is that ugly...

About 116 revs per second. That is screamin for a big block. I like how Slender the whole package ended up. Nice Job Mike & Crew. The Owner should be Really Happy :)

Yes it is. But it's worth noting that 7,000 rpm is peak. You probably wouldn't want to keep it there for anything resembling an extended period of time.

My pleasure, Jon. I've followed this story for so long that I've developed a certain tenacity, if that's the right word, about it. I really look forward to writing a final piece that includes the engines running in that Skater 388.

Have a great weekend.

JIMKID Motorsports 07-02-2011 06:20 AM

A little chrome plating will help with that...

PokerRun388 07-02-2011 09:03 AM

I wonder what kinds of top-end speeds should be expected with the 1700s in a 388...?... Didnt Chip Romer go 186 in his 388 with just 1500s at LOTO last year?...

Wildman_grafix 07-02-2011 09:19 AM

Now that is funny "just 1500's".

You know what I mean't.... Seriously, we all know 1500+ is amazing... That wasn't my point...thanku! What I mean't was, If a 388 will run 186 w/1500+ HP, I wonder what we can expect with 1700+ HP...

That was in a mile, I'm sure his boat goes well into the 190's. I believe his GPS showed 19? at the shootout.

Remember, Pyburn went 186 with 1350's.

1700 should be 205ish.

Wow, unreal speeds in an open-cockpit 38 footer.... I'm already nervous thinking about it.... If it was my boat, I'd just let Johnny T. or Bob Teague test it out...they are the best!!!!! LOL...:drink:

1500's on paper should hit 200, 1700's should be over 210. if someone will push it that far
