The battery technologies are cathing up quickly and could be there sooner than you may think. Look at the Lithium Ion Polymer and where it is today compared to 5 years ago. LG currently makes these. A number of manufactures are coming on board as well to support the growing hybrid and electric vehicle markets. Sooner or latter someone is going to give it a shot.

Getting there............

Ya, they've come a long way. But have a LONG way to go before they achieve anything near the energy density per LB of fuel. It's encouraging, but not for me.

The LiPoly's are approaching 480 watt-hours/LB in small sizes in lab environments, but nothing safe or commercially available yet. Even these most advanced batteries contain only 8% of gasoline's energy capacity.

Yes, but the odds are that we will be driving electric cars way before electric boats. When Ford comes out with their electric focus we are going to get one for my wife to use as a commuter car.

I don't mind looking like a dork whizzing down the freeway in my little commuter car on the way to WORK! But quietly puttering down the lake in my "cool" electric boat ain't happnen..... Just my .02 though......
