OT: Need Engine for Wave Runner
I know that we all hate these things but I couldn't pass on the deal. I got it for my wife. I have the boat so I have to keep he happy with something.
I purchased a Wave runner with a blown engine at a very good price. Its a 89 Wave Runner 500 F. It's old but if it was used 5 hours a year that was a lot and it is in excellent condition. I pulled the engine apart last night and apparently one of the main bearings has blown and the others don't look that good. More than likely it probably built up some moisture from sitting around and not being used. While it is apart I wanted to replace the pistons / rings and I need new gaskets as well. I figured that after I buy all the parts and get the machine work done to change the bearings I could save my self a lot of time and trouble and get a re built motor with a warrantee for just a bit more $$$ So to get to the point of all this. Is there any OSO members that repair these things and could give me a price on a rebuilt short block???? If so please call me @ 845-528-8646 Thanks :) Paul |
There is a company called Short Block Technologies. They are on the web and in all of the PWC magazines. They do short block swaps, and even give a 30 day warranty. I have used them before. Search on the web for them.

And stop blaming it on your wife
|
Travis . You want her ... She's yours :D........... With out her I could buy a new boat and move out west :p ... I just hope you got deep pockets to keep he happy. LOL

If she can suck a golf ball through a garden hose.. I'l take her no matter what it cost :D :D :D
|
If that was the case you think I would give her up :D

Take a look around at what they are worth used first. Last year, somone gave me the same exact machine, minus motor, for nothing. I recently paid a garbage guy $25 to take it out of my garage.
After looking into motors for the thing, it just didn't make sense. You can pick up one that old, in good running condition, on a trailer, for around $1000. |
Good point rainmn. Hot Boat, you may want to check the Motorcycletrader(.com maybe), thay have a section of PWC for sale in there.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but a good 500 Waverunner in running condition is worth around $600. 40 horsepower and a flat hull that rides hard and porpoises badly in anything other than smooth conditions. 30 - 32 mph topend.
Several mfrs offer motors for those. SBT is one. WSM is another. A longblock will run several hundred $$. A crank kit, 2 pistons and 2 sets of rings, and gaskets will run $220 or so not including labor or boring. In case you have never done a multi cylinder 2 stroke crank, they are not really easy to get apart and back together straight. The 500cc Yamaha motor was derived from their 40hp outboard. It was a great outboard motor, but a questionable pwc motor. Broke a lot of cranks cause the motor was not designed to load and unload like a jet will do when Yammies are good boats (*with the exception of any of the 500 units and also the WaverunnerLX, a 650 variation of the sad Waverunner hull). A WaverunnerIII is a more stable, 38mph, 3 seater made since '90 and they can be found in running condition for under $1000. |
USA short block, and SBT are two popular ones..
Paul, I just looked in my latest issue of watercraft world and a Yamaha 500 motor from SBT is 699.00 and it comes with a 1 year warranty. We just replaced my neighbors motor with one from SBT and it really is pretty convienient. You could buy all the parts from a dealer and piece it back together for about half.
I have a kawasaki ultra 150, 150hp and 68 mph. and the baja, the ultra is an absolute BLAST, The g/f takes the boat I take the ski and we have so much fun.. park the boat, and rip around on the ski.. So, its not the fastest or the best handling ski, have fun with it... |
If you don't want to pay for a rebuilt short-block check out Havasu Cycle & Watercraft . They are a watercraft salvage yard. Maybe they have a used one in running condition.

I have a 1988 350 MAG in my garage that I will give you if you promise to put it in the waverunner.:D
|
350 MAG in a jet-ski.:D :D
I'd like to see that myself. Doubt I'd be brave enough to get on it though. My 750cc, 80 hp Polaris does 50 mph and that's fast eough. |
