k planes or tabs
was out this weekend and noticed that my boat is unstable at higher speeds was wondering if k planes would help high speed stability in my smaller boat? Maybe also allow me to level the boat out?
what would be some good kits to look at for my lavey? 22.8 FT. 88" beam. thanks! |

Even under 70 k-planes are worth their weight in gold.
Depends where you boat. For me, out on Lake Erie in a 24 foot boat, I love my k-planes. Bought mine used but would pay retail for them any day of the week after having had them. |
what size k planes? kits eddie marine? thanks

I had the 280's on my 24 Superboat. If the conditions were allowing for 70+, I usually wouldn't be using much tab. They are best for keeping the nose down in rough water or countering a cross wind/waves. They had no effect on top speed when fully retracted.

Went from Bennett's to 280S K-Planes on my 292. BIG improvement. Well worth the investment.

Ironically, adding tab gives me more speed.

On my 1st 24' Sonic (in Lake Erie) it had single ram Bennett tabs. They worked awesome but couldn't handle the speed and exploded a ram. Upgraded to their "Sport Tab's" w/the dual rams, w/same size tabs. Broke one of those rams too. They were advertised for boats bellow 60 mph as I recall. That boat ran 80 but at that speed the tab's were all the way up. I broke them both times while running low 60's in moderate chop which required quite a bit of tab. Coming home (20+ mls) w/no tab was no fun at all. My 2nd 24' Sonic has Kiekhaefer tabs. They are much longer which drastically increases effect plus the pumps are 3 times as powerful. W/those you do have to be careful due to speed/effect ;) |
