Aol account hacked

Hey computer guys,

My AOL email account has been hacked and the perps are stating that I am stranded in a hotel in London and need money to get home. They are asking my contacts to send $1850 to a Western Union in London. I changed the password but friends are still getting replies from "me". How do I stop this and do I need to cancel the AOL account?

Address listed is: 33 Coventry Street London, W1D 6BD United Kingdom

I have already talked to The London Police who referred me to local authorities in Vegas. They (locals) referred me to IC3.gov and a report has been made.

Thanks,

CK

Our Yahoo account was hacked a few weeks back asking for $1750 so the wife could get back from Surrey England as she had lost her wallet & papers stranded in a hotel.

Wife was advised to close the account and start fresh with all new passwords. What a total PIA.

The kicker was you can go to Youtube and see Video on how to hack someone's account

Short term solution is to edit all your contacts so the spammer can no longer contact them. An example would be to change "[email protected]" to "[email protected]" so when an email is sent it, it can't be sent since the ".comm" domain doesn't exist. Create a contact for another one of your email addresses, so you can see if it is still sending out spam.

Long term: is it your email that has been hacked or your computer that hacked your email? The fix action depends on what has been hacked.

You'll never be able to "fix" your email unless you clean your computer first, if it has been hacked.

Power down and unplug your computer. Change your password from your phone or another computer and see if it is still sending spam. If so, that means your account has been hacked vs your computer being hacked.

Change your recovery options as well. If it asks for your Moms madien name, use her middle name or your dogs name or some thing other than the correct answer.

Many fixes, have to figure out what is broke first.

LMAO.. they asked everyone on the contact list for money to ship her back and didn't even ask my opinion on the subject...

The best was her father called to say we were hacked just after midnight- he obviously was pi$$ed at the quality of the email rather than the inconvenience.

As he put it" I paid a hell of a pile of money for her education and this is the kind of letter someone sends trying to ask for money......the grammer alone was ESL at best...."

We were trying to figure out how much of a hack we experienced and her father is worried about spelling errors..... I guess he was expecting an Ivy league hack on his daughter's behalfhttp://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/images/smilies/angry-smiley-038.gif

Got lucky, We were only hacked in the Yahoo account as the computer and the rest was clean

I think they hacked my AOL through facebook. Everything else is OK so far.

Have not seen new/unusual activity in my AOL since the password change, but my friends that repied are still getting new messages from them. Unfortunately all my contacts were deleted so I can't send out a new address.

This sucks ...

just set up another email and close the other one, do as mark said and change the password and never open it again, just have all your friends put that email in thier spam filter. usually the facebook hacks are from clicking on a link about "see who view your profile" or "look what the dad caught his daughter doing" just dont click on them. hope this helps :)

Change every password you can remember you have, online banking, aol, yahoo, facebook, credit cards, you name it change the password and make it as long of a password as you can remember and try and use caps and numbers and leteres.

OH ya and if you can remember more then one passoword I have certain passwords for banking and others for crap like facebook. That way if they get my facebook password all my others are still secure.
