Great discussion. There's also something that my friend Chad Braver at Cigarette told me about called the "cosine effect on radar." Greatly simplified, if you're not shooting the boats straight on, and that means perfectly straight on, you have to calibrate for the angle. I'm sure that's why the radar is on a boom—to mitigate this effect—but it might not be enough.
