1998 baja hammer with outboard??
In the June issue of Hotboat there is a 1998 Baja Hammer with a 1992 v-8 Evinrude 250 in the classifieds. I am currently looking to get a boat in this size, the boat is an hour away from me, is it going to be worth a look. Or does the board experts think this would not be a good set up, since this is the only one. The guy ordered it from the factory with out a transom cut out, and put this older outboard he had on it. The motor has 350 hours. The hull should be in great shape. He is asking 20k. for another 5k I can find the same boat with a inboard 7.4. With all the x factors and set backs designed in to hulls putting an outboard on a indoard hull, does this mean trouble with handling? Lastly what value does a 1992 evinrude have compared to the boats value, you can't compare a 1998 Hammer with 7.4 to this boat, correct? Thanks for all the input.

Welcome to the board, Dan!
If you're a huge outboard fan, the choice would be obvious.
If I understand your post correctly, both boats are '98s but one has a '92 evinrude while the other has a '98 7.4L.
All other things being equal, by all means go for the big-block boat. The engine's newer and has much more potential...However, the stock 7.4L is no 454Mag, it's still a good motor.

I had a 2000 Hammer with the 7.4L. It was a fun boat and would clip 70 on the speedo (I exepect it was more in the low 60s).
Good boat / motor combination. Only thing I did with mine was to put in a pair of single ram tabs. Made a big difference in rough water.
