Touching Tribute to Joey, JT & Bob
I just saw this posted on FB and my eyes filled up with tears, thought I would share for all the people who didn't get to go to KW... God Bless :(
NYC Police bagpipe team play an emotional tribute to the powerboat racers killed in Key West. |
Nice tribute Heather.
I still can't get over last week... I hope we don't see another week like that going forward. :( |
Probably one of the nicest things I have ever seen on here.
Kudos to those that made that happen. |
Man, if that didn't bring a tear to your eye ...
|
Wow. That was amazing. What a touching show of respect and admiration.
|
Wow. Did the Nassau County, NY police bagpipe team just happen to be in KW?
|

That was really nice. Thanks for posting.

They were in town as part of the Veterans day parade and stuck around for the street party. They got on top of several boats along Duval and was very touching. Being a scotsman I cannot get enough bagpipe music on a typical day let alone a week with so much tragedy. I thought it was a very class act, much like Stihl and Motley Crew's side-by-side tribute 3 laps during sunday's race. RIP

The drum in the video says Wantagh Pipe Band. Here is a link to their website.
They also have a FaceBook page. |

That was nice. Was that plane flying by part of the tribute as well?
|
thanks Speedy :(

I was standing 20 feet from the person shooting this video and it was definately a touching tribute.
I just got home from pulling Hammertime back from Key West going through Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. From toll booth operators, people at gas stations, and people in resturants..... There was not one time that I stopped that someone didn't come up to me and ask about the three racers that passed. |
Nice Tribute!
|
Saw it in person, it was very moving
|
This scene was truly amazing.......I'm so glad I happened to be there when it happened and I'm sorry the clip didn't include the touching tribute Billy made on top of the boat just before they played this.
Words can't describe how powerful this was .....Duval has seen a touch of class. thank you Billy |
Chills....

We were down in on Duval street when they were playing. It was a very touching tribute and sent chills up my spine listening to them play.
Thank you for sharing the clip all I took was a couple of photos with my phone... |
Ditto

I missed Billy speaking but it looked like he pulled up a naval officer and a new bride and groom to join the band on his boat before the band left his boat. Also a very nice gesture.
It was these moments that made this week special...so many ups and downs I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything. |
Wow, very nice tribute.
Thanks for sharing! |
I saw it in person. Duval has never been so quiet on a Friday night.
Very touching tribute to those men. I also gained a totally new respect for Billy (WHM). Very, very emotional week in KW. |
Excellent!

Earlier today, I sent an e-mail to the Wantagh American Legion Pipe Band thanking them for taking the time to honor Joey, Bob and JT. I just received this response:
Mike, I recieved your email from my friends in the Wantagh American Legion Pipe Band. I am one of the founding members. I invite those guys to come play with us, as well as the members of the Suffolk County Police Pipes and Drums Band. This year we did not have a bass drummer which didnt matter since WALPB and SCPD had theirs. We met the WHM boys last year and played on the boat. This year it was our honor to play for those who died in the crashes. Sad day for all of us. We will be back next year. If you want to set up a tribute let me know. Thank you for your kind words. Mike Bartlett, Band Manager Nassau County Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums Band 516-782-1923 |
I can not speak for Billy, but I'm a fellow Long Islander, and since 9/11 I have a whole new respect for the pipe band playing anything, much less Amazing Graze. I heard that many times a day for many days, and these days it means a whole lot more than it used to. I wasn't down in Key West last week, but my heart was. Very nice job Billy, you make me proud- as a fellow LIer and as a race fan. Godspeed

Nassau Cnty Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums
Thank you for posting kind comments concerning our playing on top of the WHM boat. We have been leading the KW Veterans Day Parade or the past four years. Last year one of our members met Billy and offered us to play. This year the same, but with a sad theme. Our band is the name sake for the unit marching/playing, yet we have members of the Suffolk Cnty P/D Band, the Wantagh American Legion P/D Band play with us. The trip is funded out of pocket by band members as a showing of support for our veterans. We enjoy the friendly relationship we have with Billy and his WHM crew. We will be back next year for the parade and hope to play once again for the racers and fans. We said a prayer and played "Amazing Grace" as a tribute to your fellow racers with honor and sadness. Please accept our condolences from the members of the band and Pipe Major Kevin Vahey. If you see us on the street, stop and say hello. Be safe. Mike Bartlett, Band Manager.
