Upholstery Welting/Piping
Hey folks,
Have a bit of an issue. Making seats for a restore I am doing and can't find Welting/Piping (some call it one some called the other) I need. Looking for a baby blue or powder blue color. Can't find any premade and being I only need two 9 foot lengths I am having a hard time buying 5 yards of vinyl just to take 5 inches off the side to make my own. Any help? |
Buy one yard...sew the ends together cut the seam allowance down to about an 1/4 or so... Glue it to one side and boom done.... About the best you are going to get.... BTW ... If you need two 9 foot sections all you will have to buy is 3 yards

Not sure if they have the color your looking for, but found this last week when shopping for vinyl

Thanks but I am looking for something like this.
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/8391/biesmeyer.jpg I did see where you can sew one end to another then cut it at an angle on youtube but you still end up with joints. No big deal where it meets the fiberglass but I don't want it to have a joint in the seat itself. It would stand out like a sore thumb. I also can only find 54 inch wide vinyl. So every 2 feet equals a square yard. To get 9 linear feet I would have to buy 5 yds. Do you know of 36 inch wide vinyl? |

IIRC, vinyl is measured just like fabric used for any other sewing.
Fabric is not measured in yards of surface area (ie, not like carpet). A 'yard' of fabric is 3 linear feet of whatever width. So in this case, 3 yards of fabric is nine feet long by 54" wide.

Now I see. Makes no since to this old flooring installer. I mean 4.5 s/f X 2 s/f = 9 s/f or a s/y in my world but if that's the way it is then that's the way it is and no wonder I always have extra vinyl upholstery.

Go to your local upholstery shop... have the order the material fir you ...... all pro upholsrty is measured 3 ft x 54 od 56 inches... you wlll get a better quality. From the sounds of the quality of work you want you are just going to have to pony up the $$$ . I can tell you that at most shops thereis no way its going to cost you more than an extra $60.
