Message body

Johnny

Thanks for getting back to me. I will offer you $10,000 for it and i will like to inform you that i will be having our local transporters to come to your location for a test drive process on the boat and moreover I will have to make a down payment to you so as to make you reserve the boat for me for not getting it sold to other interested buyer's till the test drive and the sale will be done as it would take time to get all of that done

I will make a down payment of $2000 and also I will include the test drive fees which will cost for $2500 and mind you I want the payment made out to you by check and also as soon as the funds of $4500 have been cleared into your account I will like you to have the boat ready for the test drive process and also you will make the remaining funds of $2500 payable to the transporters to cover for the inspection/test drive fees and all other expenses during inspection

I will be looking forward for proceedings to you and also get back to me with the full names, mailing address and phone number the check can be made payable to you

I will be looking forward to hear from you

Regards
Gary

Yep, the horrible and broken english is a dead giveaway. If you're bored you can have fun with them. My bro and I did that once and it was good for some laughs as they got PISSED! :D

blownhammer2000 01-13-2012 12:01 AM

blownhammer2000 01-13-2012 12:02 AM

The last time I got one of those I gave them the name and address of the head of the local FBI office.

They sent me tracking information when the check was sent out and it showed it was signed for by the FBI receptionist.. :evilb:

See them often. They send you a check for $4500, you send out a check for $2500. You never hear/see the transporter and after a couple weeks your bank contacts you to tell you that $4500 check was no good.......and your $2500 is GONE!

Your bank can even tell you the check is good at the time of deposit but it won't be and they won't honor the "word" they gave you.

Yup. First thing that gave me a clue was someone was interested in a high-perf boat, and could care less about what motor was on it.

ICDEDPPL 01-13-2012 09:36 AM

Anytime you see REGARDS .. its a scam!

I received a similar scam for my Top Gun in the classifieds a few weeks ago. He played me with negotiations for over a week. He did know a little about engines, etc. He was real clever, but not quite smart enough.

I requested a wire transfer and he said no problem, but later insisted his Cashier Check would be just as good. His bank was closed for the holidays, etc. and then wire fees from Europe (England) were expensive?? I stated wire transfer only or no deal and he squirmed for a couple days trying to convince me otherwise, only to never hear from him again....

I was advised to open a separate account to accept the wire transfer. As soon as the funds are received, immediately transfer the funds to your regular account and close the temporary account. This way the other "bank" has no way to reclaim the funds.

The trick is to actually have the scammer wire the funds....I haven't been that lucky. Hope this helps.

Yea, seen that one many times. You do want to avoid it, but as somebody else said, why not have some fun at their expense? Drag them along (through the broken glass) for as long as you can. Heck, maybe you can even get them caught!

Gladhe8er 01-13-2012 10:20 AM

I post stuff on craigslist all the time. You learn what is legit real quick. Anytime they offer asking price and talk about transportation its a laughable scam. I f$%k with some of the D-bags. Usually don't get responses, but once in a while I get a dandy back!

TeamSaris 01-13-2012 10:27 AM

I sent him a nice email that he hasnt responded too :)

WildThing47 01-13-2012 01:31 PM

I got 3 of these, one actually was very professional until the ending...

I told the last one to send me over the money...nothing ever happened hahah....

TexomaPowerboater 01-13-2012 07:06 PM

I've gotten hit a couple of times now with the same scam very recently. They never call; thats a dead giveaway. They won't expose themselves.

I'd consider giving him your mailing address to scam him out of postage....... tell him you never received it and keep asking him to send it again. :lolhit:

socalstone 01-13-2012 07:13 PM

interesting. looks/reads like the same douche bag I posted about.

onesickpantera 01-13-2012 09:58 PM

When my brother was selling a jeep he got a similar email. We told the guy "sounds great send the money!". He sent a check, which of course was fake, and then the fun started. He pretended like he was busy at first and would get him "his money" soon. Then he pretended like he might just keep the money(which there wasn't any as the check was fake). This went on and on for 2 weeks or so.

The last email my brother got was a "curse". LMAO

Wrong. The check will clear your bank. Then in 30 days it will come back as a forgery, and they will take the money back out.

gotstreetracin 01-14-2012 01:09 PM

haha i got a $19000 check for last boat i had and never did anything with it sent a few more e-mails and never heard anything back.....its funny how once you start getting in depth these scumbags just quit responding

Baja_man 01-14-2012 01:37 PM

Has anyone actually fell for it and got screwed?

charliem 01-14-2012 01:44 PM

I once gave a scammer the address of the Internet crime division and used the name John Doe. I even got a tracking number and it was delivered. Wonder if anything happened over that.

that is true, but a certified bank check lets you call the bank directly to verify the funds in your hand from the bank on the check, i did exactly this and the check was confirmed by me before i went to my bank and again by my bank in front of me when i deposited it, i also did the temp account for the deposit and and once it was deposited i transferred the funds in my account and closed the temp

WILDMAN 01-14-2012 09:14 PM

If they want to send a deposit, I just tell them to wire it. I have a separate account just for wires, then I transfer it to my regular account. If they won't wire it, then they are scammers
I played along one time and they sent me an oficial looking bank check. I still have it. I took $5000 in cash and fanned it out in my hands and took a pic and sent it to him saying "got the cash, when you coming" He said he'd send the transporter. I told him to bring the rest of the cash with him or wire the rest. I never heard from him again! Here's the check and the cash pic I sent him.

Were all of the proper water marks and security features on the check?

lol I played with him for a little while. I really wanted to get the check to see how good a forgery it was but decided not to give him my personal info. I told him I would deliver the pup in person since it wasn't too far and he said that shipping arrangements were already made.....

My Phantom is for sale. I had an e-mail message today asking if the boat was still for sale, I had a one word response yes. Next message from the prospoect-buyer is this: "Hello,
Thanks for your reply back, I will be very happy to buy the boat from you, i want to buy it for my son as a surprise birthday gift for him and i will be paying for the boat in full via cashier check so kindly email me back with your full name, address and contact phone number so that i can send you the payment as soon as possible."
Hope to read from you soonest
Thanks

This response came without speaking to me, not one question about the boat or a phone call. The buyer has a standard English name, but I have never ever met anyone that would buy a boat without speaking to the owner, and or calling the owner to discuss the boat and price.

I just e-mailed the buyer to call me.

I do not think this is legitimate, but I do want to see how this will play out.
